[xj40] Tranny seems to have a think before engaging

VERY occasionally lately, she seems to have a 1./2 second
think before engaging drive. The scenarion:

I’m stopped at a junction, waiting an opportunity to get
out. I hit the throttle and then…nothing (other than a
rise in revs, of course). Maybe 1/2 a second later, we’re
off. There’s a slight ‘clunk’, very slight, just before we
start moving.

I get the same thing sometimes when reversing.
Throttle…thinks…we go.–

I am no expert on auto transmisions at all, but one would ask the
question - when was the last time your transmition oil was changed,
and filter cleaned? We do tend to take these things for granted
sometimes. There might well be a much more technical answer Jag-
Lovers might sugest, but I always start at the basic first.

As a self-confessed non-expert, I served up the tranny as
the culprit but could the cause be elsewhere in the drive-line?

To answer the question, I don’t know when those items were
looked at but certainly not in my ownership (since Sept 04).–

Hi Ian,

Your 4HP22 transmission can’t think – it doesn’t even have a
brain/electronics like the 4HP24 used in 90 & later models

If you have the selector continually in D, and the transmission “slips
out of gear” when engine RPM drop while stopped, the first thing to
check is low transmission fluid level. If that is not the problem, then
changing the fluid & filter may help, as the cause is likely
insufficient fluid pressure at low RPM, possibly from thick, gummy
fluid, and a partially-plugged filter.

I would address the issue immediately, as you may sustain clutch damage
operating the vehicle with low pump pressure.-----Original Message-----

Yes, I know. I had it in mind that it was doing that thing
that us whio are over a certain age do…you know, where you
go into a room and have momentarily COMPLETELY forgotten why
you went there in the first place, then suddenly it comes
back to you.

Thanks for the advice. Luckily, I just found out that
there’s an auto transmission shop 3 units from where I’m
currently working.–

I concur, change the fluid and check/change the filter. My caddy did
the same thing till I changed the fluid. On 1/25/07, JagFab ian.northwood@mail.com wrote:

It could be and sounds like a sticky valve body or failing pump or
clogged filter and screen. Mouse juice might swell the O rings and make
the slide better in the valve body but the rest require service and a
change of oil complete change and cleaning screen and changing filter.
