A 2.9 automatic transmission takes 7.4 litres or 13 Imp
pints or 7.8 US Quarts FROM DRY.

But if you are draining fluid it only lowers the level by
about 3 litres - it is impossible to drain the remainder
through the drain plug (it remains in the torque converter).–

That is correct.

In order to truly replenish the system with new fluids, rather than change the fluid once simply change the fluid several times (say 3 or 4) and that should do it.

I would change the filter twice in this process. Once on the initial fluid drop and then again when the process is over (all new oil, brand new filter). Good to go.

No, not unless you want to remove the torque convertor and drain it.
If I drain 3
litres and add 3 liters of new oil it will mix with the old
oil…???
Well, yes, yes it will. That’s why you need to go through that routine 3 or 4 times. If you push about 12 liters through the system that should be enough to give your system all new oil, I would think.

I reckon that after 7 changes with a run between each you will be up to 96%
clean oil! That’s what I did at about 70,000 miles. Of course if you want
it perfectly clean you will need to do it an infinite number of times!

That’s correct if you rely on draining the tranny via the
drain plug - but there is another way of draining most if
not all of the fluid in one go - including that in the
torque converter.

It involves disconnecting the line at the ATF cooling
section of the engine coolant radiator. There are
descriptions of this procedure in various sites on the web -
this is one example :-

http://tinyurl.com/yf3k5mq - see section 3

I’ve never tried it on an XJ40 and doubt I ever will. I
would think that the chances of breaking something on the
radiator or the hose are pretty high so I would stick with 3
or 4 changes via the drain plug in the sump. Of course, you
also need to remove the sump to change the filter in the
process but you will end up with over 95% new fluid I would
guess doing it that way, which is good enough.–

Hi Ice.
The suggestions you have received so far are all valid but if you want to do
it in one hit there should be transmission specialist arouond you that will
have trans flush machines.
I used to run a Midas Car Care here in NZ and our machine would remove about
99% of the old fluid in one session.
If the fluid is very dirty I would suggest that is the way to go in the
first instance, as you surmise the new fluid will quickly mix with the old.
There is merit in a partial change when you carry out general maintenace of
oil and filters.
