[xj40] Transmission issues!

I have a 1988 XJ40 daimler XJ6, 3.6 however you may call it.

THE ISSUE- 1 year ago I was at a stop light. When I went to
take off only revs with no movement and a smelly burnt clutch.
The car would not advance but the reverse gear worked.

Bought a rebuild kit for the transmission and had a friend fix
it while I was away. Up on blocks the vehicle seemed to shift
fine. When finally placed on the road again. The transmission
would shift from 1st to 2nd at 3000rpm. From 2nd to 3rd was a
very aggressive loud clunking noise and 3rd to 4th was ok.
after about 400km of this the same thing happened. The car
stopped advancing while in gear but reverse gear worked. now
has anyone encountered this or may have an idea before I go out
and buy another kit.–

Your transmission, the ZF4HP22, is a pretty
straightforward beast. No solenoids or electrical inputs,
just a pure hydraulic/mechanical unit.

Since you had your unit rebuilt I have to ask this one
question… How much does your ‘‘friend’’ know about
transmissions? Rebuilding an automatic tranny takes
several specialized tools and a fair amount of expertise
to evaluate the various parts for acceptable wear and
tear.

Other than the transmission itself you also have the
torque converter (did you replace that) and the valve body
that you have to consider.

Your initial problem sounds like it could possibly be the
torque convertor but without looking at the internal parts
it’s hard to say.

One last question, was your rebuild kit a ‘‘Master Kit’’
meaning that it had new steels (the metal plates that the
clutch plates rub against). These don’t usually break but
over time become burnished and need to be replaced. A
‘‘Standard kit’’ doesn’t include new steels.–

First thing to check is the fluid level.
The fluid has to be checked hot and with engine running.
If you fill a transmission cold and run it the fluid level will be dangerously low when hot. They typically say it’s safe to fill it cold and then idle it to warm it up. Once hot you will find the level has dropped totally off the stick and it will require a couple of litres to top up.

Just come across this and I think you willl find (if the problems hsn’t been fixed) that pressure is bleeding from the pump allowing the ‘A’ clutch pack to slip and burn the fluid. I had this happen to an X300 last year (April 2016) From memory there is a sleeve/shaft that the clearance wears and this allows the pressure to bleed.
