[xj40] Transmission Judder

I have started to feel a short judder from the automatic gearbox on
my XJ40, registered in 1990 but made in Dec,1989.I then get a fault
light come on which resets O.K. when I re-start the engine. It
happens when I am accelerating from low speeds. On the last
occasion I felt a momentary slipping of the clutch. The
Transmission oil level is OK.
I have not had the car long & I am worried if this might be an
expensive fault. Can anyone help? Cannot see anything from previous
posts.
Cheers

This might be a good time to pull the trans pan and filter screen
and check the pan magnet. If the pan is dirty with black fibre its
friction material from the clutches. What color is your trans oil,
smell the oil on the dipstick, stinky burnt smell means big
problem.I would change the trans oil and filter plus flush the
remaining trans oil by removing the lower pipe to the radiator
filling the trans until the oil coming out is clean

Good advise.

One other thing that could cause the “judder” is the transmission mount. The rubber deteriorates. I had a judder in my car that was caused by a bad transmission.

Just a thought. Perhaps you should look at the transmission mount too.
