[xj40] Transmission Problem

Hello to everyone!

Just a few hours ago my faithful Jaguar lost power in a
highspeed-way, letting me stranded. I went over a pothole
and heard a sclash sound, next the tachometer went wild,
since I was accelerating hard because I was just entering
the highspeed-way. I tried putting the box in neutrum, 2nd
3rd but it didn’t work so I had to work myself to the right
with the impulse I still had. I turned off the car and back
on, several times, but it did not help. The instrument panel
recognizes if I’ve set park, drive or neutrum, but the box
doesn’t engage. Since it’s saturday I have to wait until
monday to ask my mechanic.
Does anyone have an idea about what the problem might be?
All help will be very appreciated.

In reply to a message from pake sent Sun 6 Apr 2008:

It’s possible that the shift lever on the tranny has come adrift
from the cable and gone to neutral. I think that Neutral is the
third detent from the rear as the lever moves forward. You will
need to get in there and dig some. Someone may have removed the
retainer clip that holds the cable in place.–
