[xj40] Transmission shift points

I brought this up two weeks ago when I was just learning how the XJ40
tranny worked. I have since done a 2200 mile road trip and noiw I can
fully describe the “problem”.

The transmission shifts into 4th gear at 60 MPH under a slow
accelleration. When it down shifts it is at 58 MPH. This is too high
for my liking.

Can this shift point be adjusted?

I do most of my local driving at 55 MPH (speed limit) and I would like
to be doing it in 4th gear to save on fuel costs.–

This doesn’t sound right at all. I’d check the adjustment of the kick-down
cable (lengthen it by taking tension out at the adjuster near the throttle
body), could be someone has tightened it up to enhance performance and this
has tricked the tranny into thinking you’re at full throttle all the time.
Flush, filter and fluid are always good ideas, too.

I don’t believe this is 4th gear- I seem to recall the car only has
3, and the lockup convertor which kicks in to act as a 4th gear.
The shift point sounds like mine, though I haven’t thought about it
for a while…

Bryan N could probably better explain this…

No it has 4 gears and a lock up torque converter which kicks in on the
4.0 cars [mine anyway] as low as 50.5 mph when not in sport mode… Both
the HP22 and HP24 wit the difference on the HP 24 being electric shift
operation.

Hi Jim,
I don’t get to post much these days as I am too busy with school, work
etc. etc. But I saw your post this morning and wanted to try to explain your
problem.
A 4HP22 transmission uses a manual T.V. cable that is hooked to the
throttle belcrank to achieve internal transmission pressure rise. This is
not a “kick down” cable and it’s adjustment is very important to the life of
the transmission. Too much pressure and the shift points extend in the rpm
range and the transmission internal pressure is too high. This can cause
premature seal failures internally. Too little pressure and the
transmission will burn the clutches as they won’t have sufficient internal
pressure to keep them engaged.
Your transmission is a 4 speed version with an electronic converter lock
up feature. The lock up feature is affected by the line pressure rise
directly. Most likely your T.V. cable adjustment is to high a pressure
causing the extended lock up shift point. However, this might not be the
case depending on how the first 4 gears shift and at what points. If they
are slightly extended then a simple cable adjustment may solve your problem
but if they are not and your transmission line pressure is operating at the
proper level then you might have other problems inside the valve body of the
transmission.
Try to make an adjustment to the cable that does not allow it to come
out quite as far with the bell crank in the full throttle position. This
reduces the internal pressure inside the transmission. See if this
adjustment causes the shift point of “lock up” to reduce closer to the 51
mph intended spec.
Caution: Do not attempt to reduce it’s shift point any further than the
intended 51 mph shift point.
Good Luck
Best Regards,
Greg
