[xj40] Unidentified Drain Hose/cruise control/drivers manual

I have a 1990 RHD XJ40. There is a drain hose that passes through a
metal loop welded to the body beneath the wiper motor and just
below the edge of the battery tray. One end is next to the rear
left hand subframe mounting, the other end is connected to nothing.
I’m hoping it is an aircon drain hose which will account for the
wet carpet in the left hand foot well but can’t see where it should
enter the bulk head or connect to the aircon, if that’s where it
should come from. It’s the same sized hose as used on the screen
washers and the cruise control.
Speaking of which, when I bought the car (for a bargain $350 at a
hail damaged auction)the cover of the cruise control pump had
parted company slightly with the body of the pump, I clicked it
back in place before driving it home. Now that its all licenced and
roadworthy its one of the many jobs I’d like to sort out. The hoses
are all ok and connected correctly without any leaks. The light
comes on when I operate the set lever but nothing happens. The fuse
is ok, the control unit, brake and auto selector switches seem to
be correctly located and wired up. Can anyone advise on best
preocedure to follow to locate the gremlin in the system.
I’m also looking for a Drivers Manual so far without any luck, can
anyone help?–

Hi Tim.
The outlets for the aircon are next to the transmission tunnel and only
visible from underneath the vehicle, BTDT recently.
If the top of the hose is in the vicinity of the left hand side of the
battery I would think it is the battery vent tube that should be fitted if
the correct battery is installed.
With regards to the cruise control.
Once you have engaged the set lever you then need to push and hold the small
button situated next to the lever, this should set the speed at the speed
you are traveling at, push and hold again and this will cause the engine to
accelerate, releasing it once the car has achieved the desired increase in
road speed will re-engage the cruise control - if everything is working
correctly.

Tim,

That ‘hose’ is certainly not an aircon drain hose. There are
only two of those, both attached to the base of the climate
control unit and exiting the floor pan on either side of the
transmission tunnel :-

A wet carpet will result from these hoses being blocked but
you may also want to check the ‘duck-bill’ drain from the
air intake plenum (just under / inboard of the wiper motor)

I think what you have found is the battery vent hose which,
on an unsealed battery, should be connected to a breather
pipe on top of the battery.

I don’t have any immediate thoughts on the cruise control
problem / solution.–

In reply to a message from Bryan N sent Tue 24 Aug 2010:

With regards to foot well leaks, do a search on the past posts
there are 3 main reasons as Bryan said the air con drains are in
the base of the tunnel and can block, blocked duck bill on wiper
motor housing, the last is rust these cars are prone in this area
to rot.
As Follows
Bulk head seam
foot wells
sill ends
lower floor to bulk head
cable entry top left and right.–

The aircon drain hoses are inside the car and go down along
either side of the trans tunnel.

Other than that I can’t comment because mine is a LHD and I
don’t have reference to how things are routed on a RHD.

On mine the closest hose that resides near the wiper motor
is a vac hose going to the EGR solenoid.

Could it be a vacuum hose that isn’t connected?–
