[xj40] unknown item on engine

Yesterday I replaced the water pump on my 1989 VDP and it went in
pretty easy except I broke something else during the work and I’m
not quite sure what it is. Located on the top and on the side of
the metal where the thermostat is located are two identical items
with two little hoses coming out of each one. I originally thought
they were sensors but the more I look at them (when removed) the
more they look like mini heaters for fluid that goes through the
tubing. Anyone know what they are and where I can get a
replacement. Hopefully I can replace the broken one without
breaking something else.

Gary,

You don’t say which engine you have in your car - it’s important in
answering questions such as this.

I’m guessing that it’s a 3.6 and that the engine serial number
(last six numerics) is greater than 139500.

If so, I think that the items you’ve broken are ‘Thermal Valves’
part number EAC 2630. One screws in to the housing on the top, the
other screws in from the side. Is that correct?

Although you don’t say, I guess since you describe your car as
a ‘VDP’ you are in the US or Canada. To source replacements, try
the usual suspects from the ‘Parts, Parts, Parts’ list in the XJ40
list archives.–

Gary,

I think Bryan is right about this - sounds like you’re describing
the little vacuum switches that are activated when things heat up.
They get extremely brittle as they age - I guess you learned that
the hard way …

Seems like I’ve seen pictures of them on the Motorcars, Ltd., web
site if you want to make a positive ID on them.

The EAC2630 thermal valve is no longer available. Has anyone found a substitute?

The V12’s used them, so there should be used ones around. I have one, but I’m far away.

Good luck,
Rob

Thanks, Rob.
I have to find a dismantled V12 engine.
Concerning six cylinder cars, this valve was used on the side of the thermostat housing in the US model cars only.

The Febi 06432 Thermo Valve has the same thread as the EAC2630. It also looks similar. The Febi valve is used in Audi, Porsche, and Volkswagen. I ordered in this valve. Let us see how it works.

I replaced the EAC2630 thermo valve with the Febi 06432 and it seems to work fine. The Febi valve is readily available.
