[xj40] up date on norm. temp

hi all, had the car idle with the rad. cap off and air con.
on.temp. gauge got to the 90 mark and the thermometer in the
coolant read 74-75c.if someone else could do the same test to
compare the two would be helpful.maybe a duffy gauge?also at no
time did the aux fan come on,when should this kick in.thanks again

In reply to a message from spurs sent Thu 31 Dec 2009:

Rob,

The auxiliary electric fan cuts in when the coolant
temperature (as measured by the sensor at the bottom of
the radiator) reaches 90 C.

The temperature at the top of the radiator would presumably
be higher than that, so at 74-75 C I would not expect the
fan to cut in. Don’t forget also that it is a pressurised
system - so no doubt some physicist amongst us will tell you
the relationship between temperatures measured at one
atmosphere (as you are doing with the cap off) and those
when the system is pressurised (Boyle’s Law or something?) :-)–
