[xj40] Use of handles

I find myself disinclined to respond to posts from listers who use a handle.

Am I being dopey?

I think that a lot of us are bugged by the use of handles and feel the same
way.

I can understand, however handles are integral to the internet, I would say
get used to it if you haven’t already. Its part of the experience, the
fantasy world that is the world wide web.

I find it especially fun when the handles are Jag related, like JagMan or
V12Luvr or something like that.

Daniel,

The internet is a big place. This little corner is one of the bright spots,
and has a long history of real people using real names. When in Rome…

There are other, darker, parts of the internet where people hide behind
handles, and I think that’s why some of us have a negative reaction to them.

On a practical level, it’s much easier for me to associate a particular car
with a name, rather than a handle. Perhaps that’s just a peculiarity of my
memory, but I can remember a lot of details about people who use their
names, but not about people who use handles, who all merge together into a
big blur of anonymity.

No problem at all with that - if the person using the handle would just add
his name the bottom of the message.

I do understand what you are saying, however with the recent advent of the
Forum based posting method we may expect more casual users to be involved ,
I certainly cant hold the use of handles against them, because that is how
the internet works. I don’t use my handle in personal emails so it doesnt
show up in Jag Lovers, but these people using forum post are coming in off
the tide so to speak. If we are going to encourage these casual users to be
a permanent part of the community, I dont think that handles should be , or
is an issue.

BTW the “Dsybok” is a long time gamers handle I have. Basically derived from
Star Trek ( what good internet nerd handle isnt) Mr. Spock’s brother Sybok,
the only Vulcan ever with a sense of humor, with a D added to represent my
name. Goofy I know, but I am the only person in the world with this handle.
