[xj40] Ut Oh - Do Jaguars Shed?

I decided Friday after work to take Layla to a local car wash and
try out a new cleaner wax I ran across at WalMart (Meguiars). It
had been a couple months or so since her last waxing, which is the
first time I used my new cordless polisher and that new Turtle Wax
Emerald Series paste wax on her. I wasn’t thrilled about that job,
as the wax eventually wore down the motor on the machine and left a
few streaks of unremoved wax on the hood that really hardened up.

Anyway, after washing the car carefully using the carwash sprayer
in one hand and my lambswool mit on the other, I took her for a
spin to dry off. I then came back to the car wash and got ready to
use the Meguiars on her when I noticed what at first I thought was
maybe bugs stuck to the paint of the hood and roof from the
washing. Closer exam revealed the horror of seeing that the
exterior paint had flaked (chipped?) off in maybe three or four
dozen spots at random places on the hood and roof, each about the
size of the head of a pushpin, with the gray primer now showing.
Before then I had noticed maybe 4 or 5 spots like that on the hood
but thought nothing to worry that much about (I used the factory
touchup pencil on them). No clue why this happened, as I did
nothing unusual to the car in the preceeding months. The clearcoat
on the roof also seemed to look hazy now in spots. Layla was
repainted about 5 years ago (clearcoat black from her original
color of Silver Birch Metallic) but the job looked first rate when
I bought her - like factory.

Is it normal for a repaint to start doing this after 5 years?
Does our hot Texas summer sun have anything to do with it? I don’t
know what to do now - it would take 2 or 3 touchup pencils to
handle all the spots. I can only assume each time I wash the car
it is going to get worse. Looks like only a repaint will solve the
problem. :(–

Paul,
Since you know the name of the body shop in El Cajon that painted it, see if
they have a warranty. I know places like Earl Schieb only warranty for 3-6
years depending on which “package” you bought. I would think that a body
shop repaint would last longer because they supposedly prep the car much
more than the one day paint shops do, hence the extra cost. They might be
willing to refer a shop in Dallas to repair/respray for the warranty (make
sure you discreetly let them know what you do for a living).

Black car in the strong southern sun is not going to last forever unless it
was waxed religiously from day 1 ( well day 40 or whenever it is you start
waxing new paint). Even then its going to break down if the car is not
garaged or covered at least 12 hours a day.

I would say its time for a repaint, as painful as that might sound. Its
worth noting that a decent paint job should run in the $3000 or up range,
and if you paid $500 for the cheapo special at the local paint shop, 5 years
is doing really well if you ask me.

Paint is one area you get what you pay for.

If you just see very small holes in the color paint, but the clear
is cracking and looking hazy, you can probably just have the old
worn out clearcoat sanded off, have the little color holes touched
up, and then have the clear resprayed.

You can get a surprisingly good result doing this.

I know a guy that just did this on my sister’s Mercedes and it came
out looking very good. It cost about $125-$150 for the materials,
plus his labor. On an older car that is not worth very much, this
is a very cost effective way to get a better looking appearance.

The longer you let the paint go, the more it will cost you to
repair it. Get to it now while the clear is all you have to deal
with.

shop. They only do spot painting though, and not entire cars. He
may recommend that I let him respray the bonnet and roof (he really
has great expertise at color-matching) if that will solve the
problem for the least amount of $s. At that time, I may also have
him grind out, fill and repaint the usual rust spots on the rear
fenders just in front of the edges of the tailight lenses (or
replace the fenders, if he thinks that is what it will take).–

No its not if the factory two part epoxy clear coat was used instead of
an acrylic clear coat. The clear coat will go hazy if scratched by a
poor rubbing compound job and it is really only necessary to use a good
cleaner on the factory clear coat. Heavy cleaning will damage it. The
epoxy clear coat is very robust. What your repaint job is I do not
know. My nose repaint was done with the factory 2 part epoxy clear coat
two years ago and other than a few spots that were scratched by my use
of rubbing compound after touching up some paint chips [later buffed out
with a find cleaner and scratch remover].

Others have noted repaint jobs do not last as long as factory paint and
I suspect it is because the factory paint system is not used in the repaint.

Just my two cents.

I don’t like those powered polishers. One tiny piece of grit on the
pad can cause untold damage, not to mention the heat build up if
too much pressure is applied. It stands to reason that a pad
revolving at x rpm is going to build up much more friction thus
causing damage to the paint finish.

IMHO, a good hand job is best (no pun intended):slight_smile:

Even if Factory spec paint is used in a respray, it will still not last as
long or as well as the orginal. Unless the paint shop takes the car back to
bare metal and completely preps and then paints the car. Paint on top of
paint just does not have the adhereing power of paint on bare primered
metal.
