[xj40] VIN #'s and final authority

Hello,

Is there a way finding out if a VIN belongs to a certain
model year? Better yet, is there a definitive single source
for acquiring parts information with applicable VIN
information for those same parts.

I purchases a part from a vendor and they referenced in the
description the part would be compatible up to my vin#. I
trusted them, made the purchase and when I received it
something made me look it up against the source I have been
using:

http://www.jaguarclassicparts.com/html/JCPFrames.html?
languageId=0&Country=UnitedKingdom&applicationType=JCP

The vendor sent me a link which is the site they use as
reference. Both sites have the same part and reference the
identical part number, however they differ in the applicable
VIN#

http://www.motorcarsltd.com

I’m not asking for help on dealing with the vendor, I want
to know if there is a ‘‘final authority’’ when is comes to
part numbers and the applicable VIN.

Thanks so much.

Rob,

Clearly the JDHT parts catalogue is the actual Jaguar Cars
Ltd parts catalogue, so that must be ‘‘the final authority’’
as far as part number applicability to VIN - E&OE of course!

The feature that can sometimes be confusing is that the
Jaguar parts catalogue will show the VIN when a later part
number was introduced in to the production run. That later
part may well be fully interchangeable with the earlier part
in production prior to that VIN but normally they then show
the superseding / alternative later number against the
earlier part number.

Do you have an example of the part in question, just as a
matter of interest?–

Bryan,

I was hoping you would respond! I’ve been admiring your
contributions to the forum and must say you are an
outstanding individual for all the time and patience you demonstrate with some of the posts. :))

The part in question is DBC2861, passive restraint module.
I’ve been accumulating parts for just in case and the vendor
had a reasonable price for the unit.

I think it’s a case of a simple keystroke error on the
referenced vendor site. Additionally, I believe it’s very
clear on the JDHT site. Let me know your thoughts.

Thanks again Bryan!
Best regards

Rob,

I agree - the JDHT catalogue is very clear and that part
number DBC2861 would appear not to be applicable to your car
with a VIN 583xxx.

Unfortunately I’m not familiar with the ‘passive restraint’
system - we never had that on UK cars - so I don’t know what
the difference is between DBC2861 and the module fitted to
cars after VIN 582138. Neither do they show any
interchangeability in the catalogue between the three
modules listed.

Have you noticed the price difference between the DBC2861
and the later module on cars post VIN 659029 (mid '92 MY)?

The later one is FIVE times more expensive even for an
exchange module! How on earth can that be? They must have
gold-plated all of the internals!

Strange also that the VIN applicability in neither case
relates to the actual model year changes. They must have
introduced them as ‘running modifications’ during production

  • perhaps something to do with US Federal regulations changing?–

There was an updated control module for a DELAY in the
transit of the belt when the ignition key was turned OFF.
A superseded part number was issued but I don’t remember it.
The dealer online parts catalogue often has superseded
numbers and both parts will work.
I have both modules for my 1992 XJ40 and I prefer the later
DELAY belt transit module as it does not seem to STRANGLE
the passenger upon release.

Plug it in and if it works then GO WITH IT.

You can call your local dealer and verify the part number.

There is no need to place a # after number.(redundant)
VIN means Vehicle ID NUMBER so there is no need for Vehicle
Identification Number Number.
It can be designated as VID #

Update,

Issue resolved! Received a communication this afternoon
from the vendor and the vendor’s source stating the part was
not applicable to my VIN.

Though there was no admission of wrong doing :)) the vendor
offered a refund plus shipping charges.

My take away is to always reference the JDHT site before
buying a part.

Bob & Bryan, thanks for your input in the manner, much
appreciated.–
