[xj40] Wattage of Jag Speakers

A mobile audio guy is coming out Friday morning to finally
replace my 5.25’’ OEM heelpanel speakers in Layla … The elements
have been ‘‘buzzing’’ for over a year now … I have initially agreed
to new 5.25’’ two-way speakers … not sure about the brand, but I
think they’re Pioneer … what worries me though is that they are
like 110 or 120 watts or some such … Is this comparable to the
wattage of the factory speakers? if not, could it cause some kind
of damage to my otherwise-factory system?–

Hi Paul:

If you’re talking about the woofers under the front edge of the rear seats, in the 88 & 89 models, those are only 4" (5-1/4" in later models I understand). ALSO they are WOOFERS that receive only lower frequency (as opposed to the door speakers that receive everything BUT the lower frequency so they won’t rattle).

Aside from the fact that I don’t believe the 5-1/4" speakers will fit the openings, you will NOT be pleased with the results. The bass will rattle the new speakers and they will NOT give the sound they are designed for since they won’t receive anything other than lower frequency (bass) signal.

Do your current speakers give any sound at all? Usually when these fail it is because someone (my son in my case) cranked the bass & volume both up full and blew the speaker. A woofer is designed with a much larger magnet & longer throw or cone movement so it can “pump” more air which is required for low frequency/bass. You may just have a bad connector, trash in the cone area, or your cone may be ruptured (which requires replacement.

You can get replacement speakers, either 4" or 5-1/4", depending upon which your model has room for, from All Electronics for $7.50 each for the 4" (GW-2048) and $8.50 for the 5-1/4" (GW-2058). I put the 4" in mine and they sound as good as you’re going to get without a separate amp for the bass and a 10" or 12" woofer in a proper baffle (which you don’t have room for anywhere but the trunk and have the gas tank blocking sound to passenger compartment). Important to note is that the 5 1/4 heel speakers are subwoofers
only. They work in tandem with the other 4 speakers. I tried 2
different sets of great speakers (I could find NO ONE who carried 5
1/4 subwoofers), and found them ALL lacking the power that the pure
subwoofers carried, for the necessary low end to compliment the
door speakers. I tried a $100.00 pair from Pioneer, and a $300.00
pair from Infinity. My ultimate solution was to re-foam the
original subwoofers - since the cones themselves were not damaged.
Kits to do that are about $25.00 for the pair; or you can send them
off to be refoamed for about $26.00 each, plus shipping. If your
cones are damaged, they can be rplaced as well for a fraction of
the cost of new speakers. Check out http://www.simplyspeakers.com
This is one instance where the original equipment design from
Jaguar is the best you can do for that size and set up. Of course,
replacing the whole system with bigger speakers etc. would sound
better. But if you are going to stick with the space configuration
you have, I would highly recommend you get your subs
refoamed/reconed, and use them. I did, and do not regret it for
one minute. My Jaguar sound system is excellent since I did that.–

Are you sure you had the ohms correctly counted. I can’t
remember anymore, my days of playing in the band was 40
years ago but if I remember the important thing was to make
sure all ohms were the same. Example would be: ohms go up
or down with the number of speakers you have wired … For
two 4 ohm speakers, the total impedance would be 2 ohms.
AND for a clean sound it is important to keep the positive
and negative wires running the same for all speakers. I
remember a guy blowing up his amp by bridging the wires. Of
course it was when we had a job and luckily the bar had an
amp for him to use.

I am surprised those Pioneers or Infinity’s didn’t sound
very good. I have a spare JBL 15 inch laying around that
will give you some good sound. You could sit it in the back
seat, dress it up with a hat and it will look like a
passenger. :)–
