Hi Paul:
If you’re talking about the woofers under the front edge of the rear seats, in the 88 & 89 models, those are only 4" (5-1/4" in later models I understand). ALSO they are WOOFERS that receive only lower frequency (as opposed to the door speakers that receive everything BUT the lower frequency so they won’t rattle).
Aside from the fact that I don’t believe the 5-1/4" speakers will fit the openings, you will NOT be pleased with the results. The bass will rattle the new speakers and they will NOT give the sound they are designed for since they won’t receive anything other than lower frequency (bass) signal.
Do your current speakers give any sound at all? Usually when these fail it is because someone (my son in my case) cranked the bass & volume both up full and blew the speaker. A woofer is designed with a much larger magnet & longer throw or cone movement so it can “pump” more air which is required for low frequency/bass. You may just have a bad connector, trash in the cone area, or your cone may be ruptured (which requires replacement.
You can get replacement speakers, either 4" or 5-1/4", depending upon which your model has room for, from All Electronics for $7.50 each for the 4" (GW-2048) and $8.50 for the 5-1/4" (GW-2058). I put the 4" in mine and they sound as good as you’re going to get without a separate amp for the bass and a 10" or 12" woofer in a proper baffle (which you don’t have room for anywhere but the trunk and have the gas tank blocking sound to passenger compartment).
