[xj40] Weird sound right rear wheel

Took the car out, while jumping on the highway I heard a pop
— got off the highway. Leaving off the gas, I noticed
that there was a dragging sound, like a sticking caliper.
Give it gas and no dragging sound, leave off gas, a dragging
sound.

Turned around and went home.

Pulled the right rear wheel, moved disk a bit, checked
things out, saw nothing wrong, pushed and pulled a bit on
the disk/caliper. Installed wheel and torqued.

Took car on driveway (90 feet long) jammed on brakes, put in
reverse and gave it some good gas pedal, hit brakes, gave
gas forward, hit brakes, did this over several times.

Went out on the road and things seem cured.

Could I have had a sticking caliper for a while?

I don’t think the noise would be gone if it were the Dif. or
trans.

Drove around for a while and it seems ok.

Any ideas.–

Had a rear wheel noise but no prior initiating pop. It was hard to
figure out and after discussion with a mechanic we figured it was
most likely a small piece of gravel that found a temporary free
ride and then disappeared as did the noise. I never did figure out
exactly where it lodged.–

Hey I like that and I’ll take that one for now. In these
economic times, nobody needs any big breakdowns.

Not sure about the pop though but maybe that pop was the
sound of the wheel throwing the stone?

I would think, plus from experience, if it were a mechanical
breakdown, the sound wouldn’t go away.

I wonder if the transmission mount is the same spring
arrangement as it was on my my SIII. The pop could have
been the trans hitting the top of the tunnel.

Time will tell if it were a stone or a mechanical failure.–
