[xj40] What exactly happened to my a/c compressor?

The a/c was working perfectly in my '93 before the car had
to be parked for a week. After that time, the air became
cool instead of cold. Another week later, the compressor
didn’t cycle on at all. I happened to turn the system on to
test it; what was probably the most shrill, frightening
noise I’ve ever heard emanated from the engine bay. I
quickly switched the system off and opened the hood to
check. The clutch wobbles and what appears to be an orange-
tinged goo is hanging out of it. What on earth?!–

An orange tinged goo … and you ask ‘‘what on earth’’
Perhaps it’s not of this earth at all, and it’s really
… THE BLOB !!! (And here we all thought Steve
McQueen killed it with a fire extinguisher back in 58)

But then again it’s probably something much less sinister
like a slipping compressor belt or worse a seized compressor
or clutch. That really can make quite an unholy screech.

Generally if your air conditioner stops cooling and the
compressor clutch IS engaging it could be a failed
compressor but its usually from a loss of refrigerant. Now
where that refrigerant went is at the heart of the problem.

The only way to see whats happening is to hook the system
up to a manifold gauge set and check the readings.

By the way, although Steve McQueen was the star, film
critics today all agree that it was Jasper Deeters
overlooked role as the civil defense volunteer that really
brought the movie to life!–

Excellent movie reference!

Now then, I checked both Schrader valves and refrigerant
shot out of both. The system was in perfect working order
(leak free) before this ordeal. I don’t understand why the
clutch is wobbling, though. It spins freely, making a
knocking sound as well, when the compressor is off. When
it’s on is when I get the unholy squeal.–

If when disengaged it is wobbly and makes a knocking sound,
it is probably the clutch bearing. Usually it quiets down
when engaged (supported by the compressor front bearing) but
if there’s axial play in the clutch bearing perhaps the
clutch can’t engage properly. This could create a squeal
from the clutch mating surfaces. Alternatively, the clutch
might jam so that the belt squeals.

Anyway, if there’s anything unusual (you mention wobble and
knock) with the clutch disengaged, the only possibility is
its bearing. IMHO.–
