[xj40] What tools to use for differential drain and fill plugs

Hello fans,

What are the best tools for removing the differential drain and
fill plugs. Also, any ideas how to refill. I was thinking to use a
little hand pump that screws onto the oil container.

Thanks.

I’ve always used a half inch ratchet extension. The best access
for the fill plug is through an access panel behind the spare tire
(and carpet) in the trunk.–

The plugs just take a 1/2 square drive. I found that by just using my 3/8 to 1/2 inch adapter I am able to easily remove the fill plug without removing the plate from the trunk. The short length of the adapter and the smaller size of the 3/8 ratchet fit easily in the cramped space.
I use one of those small plastic hand pumps to fill. Mine does not screw onto the container but just has a inlet and outlet hose.

If you remove the plate in the trunk you should be able to fill by simply using an inverted container with a fill hose attachment.

Just make sure you can get the fill plug free before you drain the oil.

I know that this question has arisen a few times previously,
so the last time I did it, I took some photos of the ‘tools’
I used.

A picture being worth a thousand words - or something! -
here they are:-

But you MUST make sure that you can remove the fill / level
plug FIRST before removing the drain plug!–

I find it easier to use a small plastic pump that screws
into the top of the oil container. They are quite cheap and
easy to use. It does not require removal of spare wheel and
carpets from the boot.–
