I have starting to use my car recently after I worked on
brakes and A/C. It just passed the safety inspection (Hooray!)
So it is early to say, but after I did a reset of the VCM,
and 40 miles or so, the average on the VCM is 13.2 mi/us gal
Before I did the reset, at the time I bought the car it was
14.4 mi/us gal.
I always use premium only, don’t floor it often, and do
mostly mixed driving.
I was hoping for a bit better economy as with premium and
given the economy, the car will be a bit expensive to run.
But you can’t count when you have a jag.

Now I still need to do a bunch of things, mainly tune up the
engine, change filters and so on. But I don’t expect the
economy will change quite a lot.

Doing the same kind of driving, we get about 19 mi/gal with
a SUV (Chrysler pacifica) and 29 mi/gal with a ford escort
zx2. Again, I drive like whimp. But the jag is drinking
quite a lot. More than I’d like.

So reading you, are you saying it is OK to put lower octane
fuel? Because the user guide, and down to the gauge, it is
written in big : ‘‘premium only’’, as warning , like you don’t
do it, the engine will blow! (OK I am over dramatic here).–

Mounir,

Our '93 VDP has averaged around 16-17 mpg overall for the
more than 10 years we’ve owned it, and it can do better than
19 mpg when the average includes more highway miles. On a
highway trip we’ll get in the low 20s, and that’s with me
consistently driving 10 miles over the posted limit like
most of the other left-lane drivers in our region of the
U.S. Two things that I’ve learned can dramatically reduce
mileage are a clogged air filter or a failed coolant
thermostat that is stuck open and does not allow the engine
to achieve full operating temperature. It will be
interesting to hear if your mileage improves after you do
the tune-up.

Hey Don
Thanks a lot for the info. I will certainly let you know
after the tune-up that I will do sometimes in the coming months.
Right now I have a couple of issue that have surfaced and
that I will have to tackle first. One in particular where I
have this huge loud noise coming from the back anytime I go
over a bump.
At first I thought it was the spare wheel moving around, but
after removing it, I still hear it. So I will have to look
at the schocks and what not.

But thanks a lot. The tune up is next after that
(hopefuly!). When there is no bump, the car is just amazing
to drive…–

Mounir…

‘‘Sounds like the spare wheel moving around’’ you can almost bet the
bank that it’s one or both of your upper shock mounts that are
perished.

The trouble is there’s no way to check them without removing the
whole shock assembly. But rest assured, it will be worth the
effort. TONS of info and helpful tips on this in the archives.–

Hi Grooveman
I didn’t want to cannibalize the thread with that issue and
will be posting about this.

Yeah there is this very loud (almost scary) noise anytime I
hit a pot hole or a bump at a decent enough speed. I need to
check a bit more to eliminate all possible visual causes,
after that, I have to look at the shocks and what nots.
I will surely tap in the knowledge on the site and in the DVD.

Thank you for your informed opinion. Much appreciated.–

Mounir,

Check my photo albums for a photo documentation of the
process of replacing the rear shocks. With a good spring
compressor and a long ratchet extension it’s not hard and
you will be very pleased with the results. I think I posted
a long detailed description of the process, possibly in two
parts, so search the archives and let me know if you need
any additional info.–

Sheesh, My vcm says 6.5 mpg thirsty little girl!

I have a 92 Majestic with about 57,000 miles on it. Straight highway miles I’d say that I get 22 MPG or a little higher. City driving is at about 17 MPG. I do drive in Sport mode and only occasionally put my foot into it.

Stephen

89 Majestic - average 15 city and 24 highway. Combined around 19 mpg. This is using premium fuel only at sea level. 141k miles.

I get just over 20 miles per gallon here in the US with combined driving. It doesnt seem to matter whether or not the air conditioning is on.

8.5 litres per 100 ks highway.1991 4.0. @ 100 kph.Premium. New Zealand.

You must have strong tailwinds, long downhill runs and teensy tootsies down there in NZ …8.5l/100k would be unheard of in BC (esp. in my old crate!)

. Well I too found it hard to believe,I drove 800ks on this trip and recorded fuel used and ks traveled at each fill, car had fresh oil change/plugs/air filter, and yes, lol strong southerly chasing me, tyres pumped to 34 PSI.
