[xj40] WIRE RECOMMENDATIONS

Dear People,

Well, if I can’t get a coil recommendation–I’d like to get
an aftermarket SPARK PLUG WIRE recommendation.

I’d love to put the new thicker performance wires on the
Jag–however; as we all know, it’s the boot extensions which
go down into the spark plug that no aftermarket kits usually
have.

Is there a reasonable aftermarket performance spark plug
wire kit WITH the long spark plug extensions?

Inquiring minds want to know.

Thanx

I have to admit, I use Accel 8mm superstock wires with the
original boots.

Far less expensive than a custom set with the boots and
since my boots have stayed in good shape, I’ve not seen a
reason to drop the extra coin o’the realm.

I know the purists will nay-say the bright yellow wires,
used boots etc but I’ve had great success and connot complain.–

opinions will vary on this, so I can only offer my
experience…during my time working on cars and trucks (which
expands nearly 35 years) I have experimented with various brands
of ‘high performance’ parts including coils, plugs, wires, caps etc
trying to get every last ounce of performance from an engine…i
can honestly say that (except for a TRUE high performance engine) I
have never noticed any appreciable difference in performance in a
stock (or mostly stock) engine by using these ‘special’
components…now if you have a TRUE performance engine designed for
racing and will be operating at high RPM’s most of its life, that
is a different story…to each his own but in my opinion paying
extra for ‘high performance’ parts to be used on a daily driver car
or truck is a waste of money…i do use a K&N air filter vs a
stock paper filter but that is primarily because the K&N filter
will last the life of a car with regular cleaning…–

How do you connect the upgraded wire to the boot sockets
which go down and plug into the spark plugs?

The Accell universal wire sets come only partially
assembeled and since I do purchase the V-8 sets, the wires
are quite long.

SO: Carefully cut the new boot from the wire. A bit of
dielectric grease and I ease the non terminated bit of wire
into the old boot, grab with a pair of needle nose pliers
and ease the boot down the wire and onto the terminator for
the spark plug. Cut the wire to length (removing any part
that might have been damaged by the pliers), slide on the
new distributor cap boot and crimp on the terminator.

In my neck of the woods, the least expesive set of OEM style
wires are $100 or so, the Accell sets are about 1/3 that
cost. At least for me, that $65 savings goes to offsetting
the costs of monthly oil changes (every 2500 miles) frequent
trans oil changes, filters, hoses and belts.–
