[xj40] XJ40 1st series front wheel bearings

I was getting a lot of confusing and conflicting warning
messages re the brake pad levels, fluid levels and abs
failure etc. I knew that my pads were still fine as I had
replaced them recently and my brake fluid reservoir was
consistently full. A couple of days ago I started getting a
grinding noise from front left and it felt as if that wheel
was intermittedly binding. Yeah by now most of you are
thinking exactly what I discovered this morning after
removing wheel, calipers and the rotor; a completely
destroyed outer wheel bearing! The only consolation being it
wasn’t the tie-rod ends, ball joints or short strut that was
damaged! After reading previous posts on this forum for most
of last night I just know that once again shoe-makers posing
as mechanics were responsible for this particular
‘mechanical’ failure!
Living in Cape Town, South Africa, in 2013 this has become
par for the course so I’ve decided to rather do my own
repairs as I do with my classics (1967 Lancia Fulvia 1.3RS &
'67 Lancia Flavia 1.8LX)
My question to anybody out there who can possibly be so kind
as to help is, what are the part numbers for these specific
wheel bearings making it possible for me to source from the
suppliers direct and do the necessary repairs myself!

Nico,

As a minimum you will need items 6, 7, 10 and 14 from this
picture :-

http://www.jaguarclassicparts.com/uk/jaguar-xj6-parts/steering-and-suspension/wishbone-and-hub-assembly-front/hub-vertical-link-stub-axle-front

And if those front bearings collapsed and damaged the
stub-axle, item 2 also.

I don’t know the OEM bearing part numbers, but perhaps
someone on the list can tell you that.–

Thank you Brian, a helpful diagram indeed, luckily I’m only in
need of the wheel & hub bearings everything else in good
working order! The wheeel bearing has miminal wear though
enough to make it almost impossible to read the part number
(Timken LOB140/L08140) I feel I must replace 'em as well.

Nico,

Below are some photos of the procedure for replacing the
front wheel bearings. Search the archives for a post from
Bryan N in response to these photos in which he provides
additional valuable information on properly adjusting the
bearings once you have them installed. Also, Bryan’s
comment about the stub axle should be taken seriously -
please examine yours for damage and replace it if it’s
scored or otherwise damaged.

The bearings are generic and can be sourced from any
industrial supply, bearing supply or aftermarket Jaguar
parts supplier. The last ones I used were made by SKF, but
Timken & Koyo probably offer identical high-quality parts.
Here are the Jaguar & SKF part numbers:

Inner bearing cone (tapered roller bearing) & cup (race) set:
Jaguar part CAC4999
SKF part number BR17 (includes cone L68149 & cup L68111)

Outer bearing set:
Jaguar part CAC4603
SKF part number BR8 (includes cone L45449 & cup L45418)

The grease seal I received was not marked with a part number
but the brand SAMEER was molded into the surface of the rubber.

I hope this info helps.

Cheers,

Don

Those are some great pics for the how-to. Nice job.

Maybe my memory is foggy but I could have sworn on my '91
the front grease seals were pressed onto the axle and the
hub spun over the seal rather than the seal spinning over
the stub axle.

Maybe it was my '97?–

In reply to a message from Win sent Sun 1 Sep 2013:

Hi Win!

It will work either way. The first time I did the job I
pressed the seal onto the back end of the stub axle, but
after subsequently testing the method of installing the seal
in the hub and then working the assembly onto the stub axle
and discovering that it seats the seal properly, I’ve done
it that way ever since. It’s just easier. You do have to
be sure you get the hub centered before gently pressing and
twisting it into place. And if I’m not mistaken, the X300
is identical to the XJ40, but the X308 is significantly
different.

Cheers,

Don–

Hi Don,
once again many thanks for all the helpful pic’s and info
re: fitting new wheel bearings to my XJ40! To my dismay I
found that the entire outer bearing had virtually
disintegrated, all that remained was the inside raceway of
the bearing itself and the cone inside the hub, all the
roller bearings had been reduced to steel dust! Anyway to
make a long story short and to cut out many hours of boring
elbow-grease I made the necessary repairs and my Jag is once
again on the road! To all out there who don’t know the
correct part number for the grease seal is as follows: CBC
2858 SU 430192A made in England…
