[xj40] XJ40 Oil Cooler assembly

I have been having problems with the oil cooler on my ‘40 for a
couple of weeks now. Basically, it’s got a serious leak so, I
picked up a ‘bypass’ on eBay and went to fit it. Got the Pipes out
(after a few minutes’ worth of cursing and swearing under the car)
and put the bypass in. The problem I had then was I couldn’t bolt
it on because the bolt on the engine was not long enough to
protrude througb the new bypass part, so I couldn’t get the nut on!
So, I’ve now bought a complete oil cooler assembly off eBay and I’m
about to start to fit it. It has come with the hoses already
attached - and, given that I can’t actually separate the existing
cooler form the feed pipes, that’s probably a good job.

Has anyone out there tackled this job themselves? Is it possible
to ‘simply’ feed all the hoses and pipes in through the front of
the car, the same way that the existing assembly will come out (I
hope!)

Alternatively, is there a solution to my not being able to fit the
bypass. Can I exchange the current bolt in the engine with another
longer one? Will the existing bolt be easy to remove?

I have a number of options here; I guess I@m asking which is the
most straightforward!–

You do have another option - remove the oil cooler altogether.

Living in the UK, there is really no need for one and Jaguar
deleted it as a standard fit item on later XJ40s anyway, so
they too must think it superfluous to requirements.

To remove it completely from your car, you do not need any
adaptors or by-pass items. Simply remove the oil filter, the
oil filter head and the oil cooler adaptor. Separate the
adaptor from the oil cooler head and bolt the latter
directly onto the block using bolts which are the thickness
of the oil cooler adaptor shorter than the ones you have
just removed.

Re-fit the oil filter and you are good to go.–

Thanks. That sounds straightforward enough. Apologies if this is a
silly question, but do I need to drain all the oil before I start?
I didn’t need to when I was trying to fit the bypass. Where is the
best place to pick up bolts?–

No need to drain the oil - the oil filter is higher than the
sump, but you will get oil draining from the passages in the
block when you remove the filter head and adaptor.

Bolts? Your local hardware store I guess. Find a nut which
fits on to the existing long bolts so you can match the
thread and ask them to find one of the new length you have
determined with that thread.

I don’t think there is a gasket specified in that position -
just use some gasket goo between the filter head and the block.–
