[xj40] xj40 rear brake pad change

I’m probably being completely stupid here but try as I might, I
cannot get both new brake pads onto the rear of my 1994 3.2 Sport
at the same time. Haynes is not helping either.

Have opened the bleed valve to get the piston all the way back, the
pads are OEM Jag, but if you put the pad on the piston side in
(with lugs behind it), there’s no space to fit the other side in.

If you try it the other way around (outer pad first), the inner one
won’t fit in.

Have tried every way I can think of - what’s the secret??

Thanks in advance.–

The piston must not be all the way back. Either use the old pad and
a c-clamp to get it all the way back or use a specific brake
spreader tool. This not much room as you can see here:

if have new pads so the piston must be all the way back to slide
the caliper back on.–

Have you removed the two cap screws holding the slider using a 7mm
(I think)hex?

I second that. It’s easy to think the piston is all the way
retracted when it is not.

Harbor Freight sells a universal brake piston retractor kit for
about $20 IIRC. Very versatile, well worth the money.
