[xk] 140 engine and parts

I think you guys are way off on the estimated values. An overdrive gearbox
usually goes for over a thousand dollars on eBay. A 140 oil pan, oil filter,
and set of good cam covers are between fifty and a hundred each. The “G”
series head alone, with all the matching, numbered, cam caps and valve
assemblies is worth a couple hundred. If the head and block number match, I
think it’s worth more just for that. If it’s a “C” head engine, the price
goes up even more. Have I spent too much time in the Hawaiian sun, or what?
Bottom line…it’s worth what someone will pay for it. If you have a 140
without an engine, it might be worth more to you than the next guy.

Aloha, Rob

Rob,
I have to agree. Just by adding up the components that you can inspect, the
XK140 engine is worth more than some of the estimates that I have been hearing
as well. My only caution is to take what is said, or written, about the
“factory rebuild” with a grain of salt.
That doesn’t mean that the engine is worthess by any means, just the rebuild.
;-))
Cheers,

Hello all,
I went out Saturday to look at the ‘‘factory rebuilt XK140
engine’’. Well, the engine was one that I think I saw at this
shop 20+ years ago. The head was off, cams sitting on the
head, carbs and intake covered in dust and grime. Other parts
were in a box. Engine number from the right side of the block
is C22251 and head KJ4774-8. The head number is very close to
my 1967 MKII 3.4. There was a transmission and overdrive also
very dirty. The son of the deceased owner couldn’t explain why
the head was off or when the ‘‘rebuild’’ took place. They also
had a few wire wheels and MKII hub caps (rusty) in the deal.
Firm price of $2,500.00. I thanked them and left.–

I don’t know if ‘seasoning’ of a rebuilt engine is detrimental to it’s
health. I have a xk140 engine with C head the came with a 140FHC I bought
around 35 years ago. Beleive it or not, at that time the buyer in Germany
did not want to go through the trouble of having the numbers matching fresh
engine shipped with the car. He would simply find a lump locally and drop it
in. This was not an uncommon attitude, in the ‘day’. Additionally titles
were not needed for export. Those were the days. If I were to use it, I
would certainly do a tear down but wouldn’t expect to find serious erosion.
I also have a 'fresh XK120 block that has been sitting unprotected for many
years. Again, a tear down, honing the bores to remove rust and confirming
that it was built to spec would be my only precautionary drill prior to use.
On the other hand, ‘used’ engines, even if bench tested, should be torn
down. I’ve seen damage from old oil acidity that has left babbit shells
looking as though woodworms have had a go at them. Trails of erosion had
left the shells with around half of their original material still intact.
Better safe than sorry, as the old saying goes.
