[xk] Brake Shoes

One of my front wheel cylinders sprang a leak over the
winter and about a pint of Castrol LMA dribbled all over the
linings and ruined them. So its time for new linings.

This is 679187 with shoes exactly like Plates L20-22 in the
manual and almost like page 146 in Urs Schmid’s Volume 1,
except I have rivets and beehive springs. Viart does not
cover the early brakes.

The Parts Catalogue page 34 would seem to indicate that I
have part 29477 on the front, the lining is 11.5’’ long and
has 16 rivets as per the manual page L24, but there are 20
rivet holes in the steel shoe and an extra rivet in one of
these unused holes. All 8 shoes are like this. So that is
why the PC says 68 rivets needed for 4 shoes, not 64. One
shoe even has M14 stenciled on it.

Does anyone know the purpose of the extra rivet? Sound
damper, anti-squeal perhaps?

On the rear there is some confusion with the PC, where on
page 34A it says for an ENV axle I should have 28356 leading
and 28357 trailing, but my leading shoes seem to be exactly
like the front 29477, and the trailing shoes are the same
except for not having the Micram notch.

Page 34B adds even more confusion by suggesting that 29477
has 14 rivets where I have 16. It appears to be yet another
error in the textus receptus.

So I wonder if anyone else has looked into shoe identity and
can straighten out the parts book, figure out my rear shoes?

They are 11.5’’ long, 17 rivets, 6 are notched for Micrams
but 2 are not, no angle braces such as your later shoes have.–
