[xk] DHC hood hook packing plate

Well after several months of intermittent applications of
PBS Blaster, the screws attaching the hood clamp hooks to
the rear of the windscreen header have finally come loose.

Under the packing plate I found a small piece of what was
probably the original woolen hood lining material, which I
think is supposed to be ‘gunmetal’ in colour.

After removing the left hook and the pot metal packing
plate, I noticed that the packing plate has the word
‘JAGUAR’ and ‘D8687’ stamped or cast into it.

The part number for the packing plate seems to be BD.8449
, so I’m not sure what the ‘D8687’ means.

Anyhow, I thought it was interesting that the word JAGUAR
appears on an actual part. Only the engine block and
various badges seem to be parts having the word JAGUAR on
them.

Perhaps the cast packing plates were supplied by a foundry
which identified various parts by casting the vehicles
name into each part?

The word JAGUAR can barely be seen in the picture…

Gary,

I have mine off at the moment but I am not home for a few weeks. I didn’t
notice any Jaguar marking on the packing pieces but will have a closer look
when I can handle them again.

As a matter of interest, did you manage to save the screws. I have some but
I cannot find exact replacements. All the ones I’ve been offered have the
wrong profile on the head.

In reply to a message from Eric Capron sent Thu 12 Jul 2012:

Hi Eric
Yes I saved the screws, and will be reusing them for now,
as the replacement screws which I had previously bought
also have wrongly shaped heads.

I was all ready to drill out the old screws, as they were
really stuck, but luckily they ended up coming out ok.

The packing plates don’t seem to be chrome plated, so
presumably the edges are just polished so they look
shiney. Thats what I am going to do anyway.

The screws attaching the three toggle clamps to the front
of the hood are still well and truly stuck though, so I
may still end up drilling them out eventually.–
