[xk] Electrical problem -2

Thanks to everyone who has given me some direction to go in trouble shooting
the problem. I have collected a list of things to check from each of your
comments. Here is another weird thing to add to the list .
It’s my understanding the solenoid start button is nothing but a start
button connecting the battery directly to the starter. Push the button and
the engine spins. It will not start unless the key is ON, energizing the
coil and distributor. When I put the tester on the hot side of the solenoid
(showing good current) and push the solenoid button, the light in the tester
goes out. Seems like it should stay on AND turn the engine. Maybe there is
something wrong with the solenoid that keeps the current from flowing.

In reply to a message from Gail Caveney sent Sat 2 Oct 2004:

Rob,

Disconnect the two light leads from the solenoid: power to ammeter
(brown ?) and feed from starter push ( white with red ?) and repeat
the above experiment. If you get the same result, you have isolated
the fault to the battery, the solenoid, the starter , or the heavy
current starter wiring.

I had a problem like this once that was worn out starter brushes
shorting/grounding.

Check the voltage across the battery terminals before and during the
starting attempt. If the voltage plummets, you have a bad battery or it’s
not charging (get rid of the little test light and use a meter!!!) If the
voltage doesn’t drop by much, then check your ground connections…battery
to frame and frame to engine/gearbox.

Rob;
When you push the remote solenoid button, even tho you say the
“test-light goes out”, does the starter engage and turn the engine
properly?? If not, that says the solenoid is part of the problem…
You are correct, the remote solenoid button will NOT start the engine
if the Ign Key is OFF, It WILL crank the engine, regardless of the Ign Key
position.
