[xk] Engine Blocks

I am looking form information on the interchangeability of engine
blocks for an xk150 3.8 liter. Does anyone have any information on
which 3.8 liter blocks would work? I have seen three different
part numbers for the xk150 blocks, but would a XKE, Mark 2 or X or
a 3.8 S work? does anyone know of any issues using any of these
other blocks?–

There is much written in the archives so you should search
there. However in general all block will fit within the
engine bay. The main issues are around the ancillaries,
like the water pump (needs to ensure it is the correct one
for the timing cover (impellor size needs to be correct to
ensure proper flow.)) Also the water pump outlet
orientation will determine fit of the bottom hose. Oil
filter needs to be correct to ensure it matches the
drillings in the block (early blocks were different to
later type.
Cam oil feed pipes are connected at different points on
early and late blocks but are not much of a problem to
resolve.
Then there are the interfaces to the sump in terms of
crankshaft seals to be confirmed. All of the above
is ‘doable’ and can also be extended to 4.2 blocks just
needs attention to detail.
Why do need to change your block?
Regards
Phil D.–

Yes, particularly be aware that oil filter heads are
different, and that with some blocks one of the drilled
ports in the side was plugged with a Welch plug because this
port was not used with the filter head originally installed
on that block. Some had a blanking plate in there, and if
you have one be sure you don’t put it on backwards.–

This gentleman is actually looking for a complete engine,
and want to get something in period. I suggest a Mk2 would
be a good choice. Please also be aware of the difference
that a straight port head brings (MK 10 & etype etc)–
