[xk-engine] Engine Numbers

Hi,
I am trying to track down the meaning of the engine number on a
friends XK engine. We think it is a 4.2 but the number stamped on
the rear of the engine on the exhaust side does not start with the
normal 7 or 8. The number is DEN 0148-S.
Any ideas?
Thanks

Andrew,
My references don’t pick up any engine prefix like DEN for a Jaguar
engine fitted into a Jaguar car.
What about a Jaguar engine fitted into a (Dennis) fire appliance?
Best regards

The size of the engine is cast into the block in large letters on
the inlet side is it not?–

So if this engine is indeed from a Dennis fire truck, then does
anybody know any details about these engines. What year it would
have been manufactured etc
Thanks

Andrew,

Found a reference to these buried in a Lucas dsitributor spec
document. 1969 to 1975 Dennis Fire engine type D.

Shifting back to a model of the Jaguar engine, I looked up the Dist Specs
for my '53 XK120 DHC…
My Distributor is stamped: DVXH6A*40199E…
Checking the list, we find the “40199E” is, indeed, for a '49-'54 Jag XK120
with 8:1 CR… but the first part of the number on the list is “DVX6A”
Scrolling down farther, one finds “DVXH6A” in two additional listings… the
40216B for the '51-'53 Alvis TA21 and TB21, and the 40411B for the '54 Alvis
TC21. (no specs listed for any of the above).
Now the question:
Can anyone tell me the significance of the “numbers” “DVXH6A” and
“40199E”?? And “Why” the noticeable difference in the “paired” number sets??

Charles,

The list has the 40199E as the service number and DVXH6A as the
model number.

Good question so looked at the list and applied some logic. Always
risky with anything Lucas I know. Looking at the list it would seem
the the model number is not unique but the service number is. And
if you look at the some of the service and model number
combinations that have data, then you can see that service number
probably refers to the spec of the internals such as the springs
etc. as the rpm’s and the amount of advance are all different for
different service numbers but the same model number.

Then just looked at
http://www.telusplanet.net/~chichm/tech/lucastuning.pdf and it
states
‘‘A listing of service numbers is available which includes the
factory built-in advance curve, applications and other data.’’
