[xk-engine] Frozen Rebuild engine

Hello
I have a late 4.2 rebuilt motor that has sat a little over a year
before trying to fire it up… The motor is now frozen… it has had
a complete rebuild and turned freely right after rebuild… I have
been dumping diesel in cylinder, to no avail. Can I pull car down
the road and pop the cluth and see if it frees up?? or lastly take
motor out and dissademble… I hate this last option… Got any
Ideas???

and yes all new pistons, rings, bearings, chains, valve springs etc.–

If the engine was well lubricated after the rebuild, it shouldn’t
be stuck. If the spark plugs were left out, and the cylinders were
exposed to the atmosphere, it is possible that our humid Texas
summers may have caused the rings to stick to the cylinder walls.
The diesel fuel should free it up after a while, or get a jug of WD-
40 and pour it in. There is also the possibility that the starter
motor has jammed the pinion into the ring gear. I would remove the
starter motor, and use a breaker bar to knock it loose. If that
fails, you can try bumping the car back and forth when it is in
reverse or first gear. I wouldn’t be too quick to pull the car down
the road popping the clutch. That’s a good way to snap an axle
shaft, or damage the gearbox.

You might be right about the starter, I have a gear reduction
starter in it and there is no dowel to properly align. I am not
comfortable with the starter fit any way… I am using an aluminum
flywheel. I am not even positive that I have the right pinion
geared starter… I will try pulling starter off and see if it will
turn… I have a new T 5 tranny in it and really dont want to
screw that up…–

Assuming standard transmission, high gear will give you better mechanical
advantage.

By all means, take the plugs out! It may be effective if you use a better
penetrating oil down the cyls, perhaps some Kroil, then try the BA wrench
again, or better yet, go to the bottom side of the bellhousing and use a
prybar against the flywheel teeth. In any case, you may have a smoker or
‘wet’ engine due to the cylinder and ring damage from the rust.

Jack up the rear axel, get the rear wheels off the ground, put the
trans in 5th and try to turn the engine by hand from the rear wheel.
Get your friend to hold the other rear wheel.

I suggest putting it in gear and rocking it back and forth until
the starter motor releases.–
