[xk-engine] Hard starting hot engine

I have a 67 e-type 4.2. After starting fine from a cold
start and running to operating temperture the engine will
not start when shut down and then asked to start when hot.
I have replaced all ignition components. It acts/ sounds
like fuel starvation / vapor lock but cannot figure out.
I check the plugs after turning over the engine trying to
start and they are dry. Any thoughts are greatly
appreciated–

Do your carbs seem really really hot?
My ‘51 XK120 used to do that, the intake manifold and carbs
would get really really hot about 5 minutes after the engine
was shut off, and it wouldn’t start unless I put on the
enrichment device. Then it would run rough until after it
was running for about half a minute the carbs would get
noticeably cooler and it would smooth out. I added 1/4’’
thick insulator spacers between the carbs and intake
manifold and that seemed to help a lot, the carbs were
cooler and it would start easier. This was a modification
Jaguar themselves did to all cars after '52, so yours should
already have them. In which case look for clogged water
passages in the manifold or head.–

What is the condition of your distributor? My 67 4.2 E Type
had exactly the same problem. Like you, I tried everything
that I could think of including tuning the carbs, replacing
the jets with Grose jets, new coil and replacing the points
with Petronix. All to no avail until I had the distributor
rebuilt. Since then, I have had not one problem with
starting, cold, warm or hot.–
