[xk-engine] Re: Anti-freeze

Well, Nick, I do think that you have been overthinking your antifreeze
practices LOL.

While not the VERY hot temps experieinced by the SW USA (or
intermontane Spokane), we do have hot summers (35C/95F) to go along
with our VERY cold winters (-35C/-30F) and lots of us up here just use
an approximately 50:50 mix of water-antifreeze year-round. We
generally lean to a bit more antifreeze than 50:50 because we usually
experience -40C (-40F) at least once a year. So far, no issues on hot
or cold days (for our daily drivers, and the winter-stored British
cars!!). I change antifreeze every 2 or 3 years.
The Evans waterless coolant has not been popular up here, although
I don’t really know why. I’ve never tried it, but I do have some
personal scientific bias against using it.

any…but now some are more eco-friendly if you like. Use the mfg
spec for mix of water-antifreeze for the lowest temps possible in
your area. Yes water actually cools better and the products that can
be added to aid cooling also work better with water. Summer is HOT
where I am…winter is cold…I actually drain a hi anti freeze winter
storage mix (with waterpump lube/anti rust)…and refill for summer
driving with a low antifreeze with waterpump lube/anti rust added
(Napa and Zerex make it…Prestone used to…hard to find now)…for
summer. Brief task and keeps system in good condition…the drained
mix can be saved, labeled/date, and re-used a few seasons. By the
way…it is a good idea to add the waterpump lube/anti-rust product on
any re-fill. I prefer to buy the 100% and mix myself, rather than the
50/50, as I have to mix to protect to 20 below zero F. The jury is
out on the Evans waterless coolant but look it up. Of course dispose
of old in an approved way…and don’t leave where kids, dogs, pets,
animals can drink it.

yep…I have been known to overthink…and over do…my ‘‘nick’’
name…has been ‘‘O K Nick’’…the O K for overkill…
sometimes it has worked for me…sometimes not.
wow…Saskatoon…I have said around here, how far North do I
have to go in summer not be stinkin hot…I guess farther
than a bit N of Saskatoon !!
On the coolant type…(re Evans) …it is what one sees in the
water passages in blocks, radiator bloom, and front cover
corrosion in the waterpump vane area that makes me think
there must be someway to slow or prevent that. Evans
‘‘claims’’ it does…I am so far tho not switching…it does
take a major flushing to make the change but that would not
be a bad thing
