[xk-engine] XJ6 engine in E type

Could anyone tell me if an XJ6 engine from years 1968 - 1986 can be
used in the Series 2 as a donor engine?–

Yes. Done it myself. Lots of info in the E-type archives. Easier if
you have an existing E-type engine to swap parts like the water
pump, sump etc., depending on exact year/model.

Many thanks Pete

I thought that might be the case. I know the sump is different and
I was also under the impression that the water pump needs to be
swapped, but not sure of the reason. Having heard of some horror
stories when pulling some of these old motors apart I thought I
might look at the option of getting another block in good condition.

I have the original tired motor still running in the car, however I
have an opportunity to purchace a rebuilt short motor from an XJ6
at a bargain price. The block looks idential to the one in the car.

Sump, oil pick-up pipe, water pump, filterblock and cam feed etc
can be mixed & matched. The water pump needs to be swapped to clear
the picture frame at the front and inlet hose angle at the bottom
depending which type XJ you have. Make sure the impeller matches
the timing cover. You may have some playing around to do with
pulleys/damper and at the back the longer head may need relieving
fractionally to clear the engine stabiliser bracket, but it’s all
do-able and in the archives.

Thanks Again Pete

I believe the short motor XJ6 rebuilt motor is from around 1970+,
long studs. I intend using the original head from my 1970 FHC. I
also believe that the water impeller is the larger one on my water
pump and so should bolt straight onto the XJ6 1970+ block. Please
correct me if I am wrong.

Peter : you can use your existing waterpump and front cover as
a ‘‘matched pair’’ and just swap them for the ones on the XJ short
motor . The one thing to check on whichever of the front covers
you use is that corrosion has not made the area of the cover
directly behind the impeller wafer thin and therefore either
porous, or about to become porous–

Thanks Chris

I will keep my fingers crossed when I remove the water pump.

The other thing I noticed on the XJ6 motor is there is a large hex
headed nut at the end of the crank shaft that holds the harmonic
balancer and pulley in place. It looks different to my S2 motor. A
bit concerned that the pulleys might not line up.

Any thoughts?

Peter : the front bolt itself should be the same on both engines.
What may be ( indeed is likely to be ) different is the
pulley/balancer itself. The XJ ones usually have multiple pulleys
to drive e.g. PAS . There should be no difficulty again in merely
swapping your present pulley and balancer for the one on the XJ
motor - the crankshaft itself will be identical–

Or indeed thinking about it further, you probably can just unbolt
the pulley ( secured by 4 smallish bolts ) and swap them without
swapping the balancer–

IIRC there are two different hole spacings for the bolt-on pulleys
in front of the damper so not every combo interchanges. There is
usually a seller of alloy pulleys at Stoneleigh and I was miffed to
find I couldn’t use them. Suppose they might not have been Jaguar
but they looked it.

I ended up machining the back grooves from water and crank pulleys
to bring the belt line further back and clear the picture frame at
the top. They are dead easy to machine as they are cast iron. Then
by means of a few spacers and an E-type alternator bracket I was
able to rig up a triple pulley belt line and skip the E-type belt
tensioner jockey wheel.
