[xk] expensive toolroll

The good news is that eBay item # 170277981038 is basically a
genuine/original XK140 tool-roll/kit.

The bad news is that it has clearly been prepared to give claim to “these
tools are mint” and thus without seeing tools close up it is hard to say
just how good or otherwise the tools really are - hopefully the obvious
cleaning has just been cleaning with no abrasive effort to “improve” them.

The worst news is of course that in preparing the tool-kit, a few missing
tools have been replaced with non-XK140 tools, which of course may have been
done prior to this vendor, but reasonable chance it was done by vendor
whilst obviously preparing tool-kit for sale. An expected outcome, given
vendor himself has described tool-kit as “XKE” and not XK140.

The “Threaded Bolt with high shoulder” should not of course be in tool-kit,
but could be a useful BEES brand bonus to purchaser.

The “Dunlop pressure gauge No 60” looks in fact to be a Dunlop No 6 which is
a relatively easily found non-Jaguar tool-kit gauge. Correct XK140 pressure
gauge should be a DUNLOP No 6J.

The “6 1/4 Sheffield England” pliers as described would be the type briefly
used in 1967/68 Jaguar tool-kits and not XK140 which look identical in shape
but should have SSP marking. Photos are indistinct whether description may
in fact be wrong, but on face value of description have to assume wrong
pliers.

The seven box (or tube) spanners look correct and in nice condition.

The “6 1/8” tapered pin with factory bend on end" should be easily
straightened and become what it is a correct “Small Tommy-Bar” without any
bend on end.

The LUCAS screw-driver/feeler gauge is missing.
The brass tyre-valve extractor is missing.
The LOCKHEED brake bleeder-tube Container is missing.
The Camshaft setting gauge is missing, as they are often left out of
tool-kit due to just being housed loose.

The JAGUAR screw-driver, brake bleeder spanner, 4x Garrington open-ended
spanners, large Tommy Bar, 4" Garrington adjustable spanner, all look to be
correct, and reasonably nice subject to looking closely at jaws of spanners.

And tool-roll itself looks to be original XK140 in better condition than
usually found, but with many new repros available of variable quality
depending on source/vendor.

ALL in ALL - a pretty nice original XK140 tool-kit - better than any I have
seen on Ebay for a long time. The couple wrong tools and couple missing
tools will give the new owner something to look for while he contemplates
best way to restore original blackened finish that has deteriorated/been
cleaned off - so value, probably a good buy, given what some buyers have
purchased off Ebay, and continue to do so.

Take a look at eBay item # 170277981038.

A toolroll which I had been watching, listed as for an XKE,
has just sold for a big price. At first the bids seemed
reasonable, even low, but according to the bidding history,
in the last 1/2 hour the price jumped up almost $1200.

Anyhow, it looks to me like it was a XK140 or 150 toolkit.
And a nice one, at that. Those marked-in-the-centre tube
wrenches are hard to find. Perhaps Roger could comment on
what Jaguar the toolkit really is for ?
