[xk] FW: Carburettor diaphragms

Listers Has anyone been experiencing diaphram failures with Su carbs I
have just replaced three diaphrams in HD8 carbs The fuel or something in it
has caused the rubber to perish and soften I have also had other rubber in
fuel systym parts fail This may be a problem peculiar to our part of the
world However new diaphrams are not available here at present I would
presume this would affect all cars and carb sizes David Longsdale may
know more would he please contact me off list Regards John Ledbrook and

I’m trying to picture a diaphragm in a SU carburetter and I can’t come up
with anything.-----

John and Terry,

Yes, certain fuels can affect the SU diaphragms. Modern American fuels are
known to affect modern diaphragms, and ‘normal’ modern fuels can affect old
diaphragms.

For other listers, diaphragms are found in HD type carburetters.

John:
I don’t know where you are located, but check the amount of ethanol in
the fuel you purchase. It will perish the soft bits in your carbs. Most
fellows have little or no familiarity with diaphragms as the only use of the
HD type SU was on the 150S and those are few and far between. Unless you’re
at the South Pole you should be able to buy diaphragms through the usual
suspects.
Regards

Location? South Pole? Not quite but try the closest
continent to the north and just in case I don’t have the
relative distances correct, not South America and not Africa.

The .au is the clue.

Thanks to everyone for input into diaphragm problems, Have located another
source for kits, previous supplier awaiting delivery from U.S. Bruce, I am
in general direction of South Pole, from Down Under and the kits are for a
150s which I have owned since '69. The car had not been started for over a
year and I assume the u/l fuel left in the system had attacked the rubbers.
I hope I don’t have to go through that exercise again and thankful that
Terry Hilton happened to be visiting at the time. Regards to all, John
