[xk] Heater pipes colour

I have a quick question regarding these 2 metal pipes:

  1. Running below the manifold, suspended on 2 brackets
  2. L shaped, shorter pipe
They both run between the water pump and heater.

Were they black or unpainted??

My brackets for the long pipe were definitely black, but the
pipes were just very, very rusty, with no trace of any colour.

Urs shows them as black on a blue FHC (vol 2, p. 19), but it’s
a restored car.

Tadek;
I believe they were originally unpainted… thus the rather complete
inside/outside rust job on them. If one wanted to emulate the “original”
look, then using stainless steel might be a way to go… I replaced my
rusted-out originals with 1/2" steel tubing and made the simple bends. I
will buff the surface then clear-coat the steel. (1/2" is a hair large, if
you have 12mm tubing in your area, that might be closer to the original
size)
Some folks use 1/2" copper pipe (tubing), scuff and paint black…
(copper doesn’t rust!).
The heater pipes can be “hand made” for just a few dollars!

Charles,

I bought mine from xk unlimited.

They have one major advantage, that is they are made of stainless
steel.
The long one also has a small disadvantage: it’s wrong shape and
wrong length. However, I managed to modify it and looks correct
now…

Tadek,
The water pipes were originally black painted. The pictures in my book
(vol. 2, p.16) you refer to were taken from S678168, a 17000 miles original
Pastel Blue DHC from Colorado which since some years forms part of a well
known Swiss Jaguar collection. As nearly all other cars from which I took
pictures in order to illustrate my books it’s not a restored car as you
wrongly presume!

Hello Urs,

Please do accept my apology - the car looks too good to be
true…

There were always 2 items that were a curiosity:

  • p105: the engine fan blades are unpainted, however on the
factory photo of a FHC assembly (frame to body) and p.93 the
fans are half painted. This was done in the same way on my car.

  • p141 steering box - on my car it was painted black all
together, here the aluminum part is unpainted.

Could you possibly comment on the above?

Tadek,

  1. 6-blade radiator fan: blades were painted black as far as the
blade-supports (where the blades were rivted on) reached. This may be around
    45% of the blades length. See vol.2, p.16, pic.1.
  2. As far I could find on original cars the steering boxes were painted a
    thin black.
    Best regards

I have to make a pipe for my 140, so I just what to be
clear on the sizes. Is the 1/2 inch measurement ID or OD?
In Canada pipe is normally ID and tubing is OD, so when see
the term ‘‘pipe’’ and ‘‘tubing’’ used interchangeably, I get a
little confused. Thank you for any clarification you can
provide me on this. I don’t have a pipe to use as a guide,
but I should be able to scale the drawing on page 189 of XK
140 Explored [plate 4-a3] to get what I will require.

Cheers

Harv,

Currently in Melbourne for a week, but when I get home on Monday I will measure pipe for you.
By the way, on XK140 at least, and I am sure would be the same with XK120, this heater pipe (actually drawn mild-steel tubing) is indeed painted Black enamel that indeed protects the outside, but if running inappropriate coolant can and does rust internally especially at the hose-ends.

I have 3 steering columns here, and all showed various
amounts of black remaining on the aluminum steering box,
though all were flaking off. It seems to me to be another
case of poor cleaning and no primer before painting the
entire component after all the assembly work was done, so
after many years it starts to flake off.–

I found the black paint on the nuts that assemble the unit too. I
think it was assembled and then painted all together.

Urs,
I see several places in your Vol 1 that you state the piping by the rear
wing was either painted body color or was made of PVC that was body color.

Was the rear wing piping ever black?

What about the piping around the rear license plate plinth, Black or body
colored?

Steve,
Yes, rear wing piping was black on black bodied cars.
Rear license plate plinth piping was black rubber, painted
in body colour on a few early cars.
Best regards
