[xk] how to cam bearing shells come out

Hi…I don’t want to bugger anything…so how do the cam bearing
shells come out, found two bad lower exhaust ones…plan to do
the entire exhaust side. Intake ones look fine…is it ok to do
only all the exhaust, then re-measure valve clearances?
anyway…how do lower and upper come out, how do the new shells
go in.
…and I need a set if anyone has em on the shelf.
Thanks,
Nick–

There should be a small slot about the size of a small
screwdriver at the edge of the shell. You can stick a small
screwdriver in there and pry up the shell.
If it won’t come, it is expecting you to speak British
English to it, so you must prise up the shell.
They come in a whole set so you might as well do them all.–

Nick;
One sice of EACH Cam Bearing Shell has a small “tab”
(or ear) that locks it into place… Take your Brass Hammer
and lightly, VERY lightly tap the edge of the cam bearing
thar DOES NOT Have The tab (or ear)… I usually just use
my thumb to push them out, but some can be a bit stubborn!
Reinstallation is the reverse of the uninstallation, except you
don’t use the hammer AT ALL!!
Do note, ALL XK Engines, from the first 120 to the last
(real) Jaguar XJ-6 built use the exact same Cam Bearings…
So, there is no need to pay the “XK120 Tax” if the 4.2 XJ-6
bearings are cheaper!!
Like ANY Bearing Shell, on every engine built AFTER the
early Model A Fords, wipe a skim of Lubriplate White Grease
over the "
Lastly, Don’t “Cheap Out”… you can ONLY buy a complete
set of eight Cam Bearing shells… Use them all!!

Great !! went right out and got em out…a VERY light tap tap
tap. with a tiny screw driver behind the slots, like a jar
lid…and all of a sudden loose and out. Thanks.
The bearings in there (the lowers) are part W 1692 with the
Vandervell logo. Seemed easy enough so yes, I will do all.
Yippee.
got my clearances and needed shims…will now order parts and
wait for the next steps. Don’t know why the middle two
lowers only are trashed? The cam itself tho luckily is ok.
Two exh tappets are a little scored too, so will replace em.
I will carefully sop up all oil in the cam galley and be
sure it is clean of any metal debris, both wiping and
magnet, and will change oil and filter on job completion
before start up. Quite a price diff on shims also at the
usual suppliers. Pays to shop.
thanks again

The new cam bearings will also change your clearances and
shim needs. Might want to hold off on ordering shims
until you get the new bearings in.–

Not sure what cams you have but look to see if you can
remove the bolts in the rear end and then flush the cam oil
ways out. most people either use a long gun cleaning brush
or run a ‘pull through’ wire. Its just a safety measure
before you re-assemble.–

more thanks all. I will measure clearances again after the cam
bearings are in…since it is all apart now, I plan to put in
new shims based on what I now know…as some are pretty far
off, and I will have to R&R cams again anyway after bearings
are in and the subsequent clearance check,) hoping my shim
assortment has what I will need,) I have one size over or
under for what I calculated…and a few doubles. The question
is, Do I feel lucky today?
and I will try a clean of the oilways.

Make sure you clean the oil feed passages in the serrated
plate, too…these send oil to the sprocket/chain interface.–

update on year old post…helpful answers below…cam bearing shells were just kinda stuck.so it took a.very lite tap on edge to pop em out…I think tap on edge is better than a pry. Do absolutely no taps when installing new shells tho as it will damage the bearing shell. (good plan to have a second set on hand in case of damage to one or more( don’t ask me how I know) …just push in with fingers. Then use some new cam lube when installing cam. I now have a nice assortment of clearance adjust shims…Yup it did take two times to get clearances exact. Be sure to inspect that the shim wobbles when set in place…if a valve stem is too short the shim will contact collet…measurement is then meaningless…don’t ask me about that either. OK…had to grind off thickness at full round edge of shim til it did wobble…then check again…cams on and off 4 times.

There are reputable shops that will only replace the front ones.

Ask me in private.

cam bearings?? yes replaced em all.: did not notice the few poor ones til after the first clearance check…and cams came off…so bearins in, a check, close but enuf off to redo, then rechecked clearances…and did my shims to adjust…re checked…found one short valve stem with shim on collet so would not adjust correctly, …did it all another time.
