[xk] K& N filter maintenance

In reply to a message from Tom Carson sent Tue 30 Jan 2007:

Tom,
If you take a wiff of K&Ns’ cleaner solution and compare it with
Castrol super clean I believe you find they at least smell alike,
and super clean does a super job. Simple Green is probably just as
good.

Just keep the Castrol stuff away from aluminum, unless you
want to spend time trying to get the marks off it…

Sorry I can’t answer your question, but can I ask you one
please? Which K&N filters are those? Only If there isn’t
enough clearance for the PiperCross socks I have for the
trumpets I’m about to fit, I might need to make other
arrangements.

Thanks

I am putting the roadster together again after fixing that doggoned
taper pin issue on the clutch shaft. I’m ready to reinstall the K&N
air filters:

Tom,

PLEASE DO NOT USE GASOLINE!

THE HIGHLY FLAMMABLE FUMES ARE WAY, WAY, WAY TOO DANGEROUS!

We’d hate to loose you to a home workshop accident that often
happens this time of year when you are likely to be working in a
closed up shop heated by some means of open flame. Then of course
your cars may burn, too, so then you’d be dead AND pissed off!

Use kerosene (parafin in the UK?) or at worst, mineral spirits.
They have MUCH higher vapor pressure and flash point, much safer to
use, and will clean the gause filters with no problem. The
slightly oily nature of kerosene is probably enough to keep the
filters oiled.–

Now’s the time. K&N says ‘‘use our cleaner fluid’’.
I say gasoline.

Ken,

The K&N part numbers are in the text associated with those images:

Be aware that I posted those images to illustrate how I modified the
front filter to fit in the tapered XK engine bay.

Thanks for that Tom,

It looks like the engine bay is even tighter on your 120
then my 150. Hopefully the trumpets and socks I have will
fit in OK but it’s good to know the alternatives.

Cheers
