[xk] Nice Barn Find?

Take a look at Ebay Item 280960472537. It is described as a ‘‘nice
barn find.’’ I wonder what the seller would consider a not-so-nice
barn find to be.

Here are some numbers for John.
XK140 OTS S811941, body F12003, engine G6506-8S, gearbox JL33875
So the rear half of the chassis is rusted away to nothing?
Not quite as bad as the Mark IX that was dug up out of a bog.
The rear axle is mentioned but not pictured. Amazing that it
is already bid up to $5k but I don’t see $5k worth of parts
here.
If it is in Orchard Park NY it may be from the estate of Bob
Zimmer. He had a huge stash of parts cars back in the 80s.–

I wonder if it has a clear title, that would explain it.–

Nope, bill of sale only. Is an original data plate enough to
build a car around?
I see even the front of the chassis is missing.
Surprisingly the seller has pictures of the block and head
serial numbers.
Interesting art work on the underside of the bonnet.–

A data plate alone won’t get you a clear title in any state I’m
aware of, but I’m sure those in the business of old cars know a few
tricks or loopholes.–

I believe that if you had a bullet proof chain of custody record of
the data plate, and could show that the C/N corresponds to the
wrecked car stamping, you might have a chance in a few places.

By ‘‘bullet proof’’, I mean bills of sale and copies of titles from
all previous owners since sold new. Really hard to do, but is
possible if original owner kept extensive records.

That does not mean they will necessarily title it as a Jaguar
XK120, which certainly affects value.

What I said. If ALL you have is the data plate - you have parts.
But if you have a title, or valid (even decades long expired)
registration papers, and the guy whose name is on either of those
documents is the guy taking the cash from your hand, then that same
pile of parts become a XK-120 with a high probablity of getting a
clear title. I suspect you can get a restricted title for most
anything, but it may be branded as Rebuilt or Homebuilt.–

811941 has been entered on XKdata.com so the current state
of this poor kitty is preserved for the future, whatever
happens to what’s left of it.
Current bid is $6200.
Maybe it will become a replica C-Type.
There is already one on saloondata.com in the Mark VII section.
The chassis is gone from the door hinges aft, and from the
steering rack forward. Fenders all gone. Looks like it was a
donor for some other 140 that got crunched.
Seller says it comes with driveshaft, rear axle and 5
wheels, but no paperwork.
What do you suppose an original 1956 Dunlop Road Speed is
worth? My new grand kids will need a tire swing. ;-)–

In the state of Alabama you can obtain a clear title on just a
bill of sale for any vehicle prior to somewhere in the early
70s. I have done it twice.–

Sill possible, but Alabama policy has changed.
Up until about two years ago you could simply obtain a
transferable registration by mail - if you had a ‘‘contact’’ person.
Today, you need to physically produce the vehicle and have it
inspected by ‘‘Sheriff Billy’’.

Many states have bonded title provisions to allow vehicles sold on
a bill of sale to eventually receive a new title. In Iowa, the
bonded title process takes three years, requires an inspection of
the vehicle, a monetary bond that is held in escrow, and seems to
be designed to prevent stolen vehicles from receiving legitimate
titles.

In Iowa, only complete vehicles are eligible for the bonded title
process. This particular XK140 would not qualify without further
restoration.

I am somewhat confused as to why anyone would be interested
if the car can be titled. The car will never see the road
again under its own power. Nobody has that much time or
money, our offspring (like the guy who built Mt Rushmore) to
finish the job. It’s a bucket of bolts, with a few useable
parts. I am mystified as to why someone would bid $6200,
they must need the bonnet. Maybe the art work on the
underside was done by Picasso:-)

Either its the artwork on the bonnet, or it was originally
owned by someone famous, or someone wants it in order to
wade through the bureaucracy channels and eventually get a
legitimate 1956 title on their replica C or D-Type or
something. Its sort of not quite nearly almost enough to get
a start on a replica.–

If you have a clear title and a bare concrete floor, you can build
a car that matches that title that can be readily registered and
sold. This is the reason Brian Lister once said something to the
effect that only 30 of his original 25 cars survive today.–
