[xk] Non-XK- M-B 450 rebuild?

Hello, everyone
Since this is the most knowledgable group of car people I know, I figured I’d
ask. I have an “opportunity” to purchase a 1976 Euro model 450SLC. I think
it has a bad head gasket (white smoke, low antifreeze, rough running when
cold).

I pulled a couple of repair books and they basically say that, withouth a
stack of special tools, you can’t work on the engine. Anyone have any
experience?

Also, does anyone have a Euro spec late model car in the US? What kind of
hassles do you run into? The car looks really nice with the thin bumpers and
I like the fact that it is much simpler (no smog stuff, no climate control,
etc.) I also think I can get it dirt cheap but if I can’t pull the bad head,
then it won’t be a bargain at any price.

Thanks for your help and indulgance.

Bill;
I had experience with a European VW that was brought into the US…
the owner workerd for the diplomatic corps and requested the VW be sent to
the VW dealership in Ft Worth. I wrote the estimate to bring the VW up to
current DOT and emissions specs…
This was in 1980, the estimate came to over $10,000 and there was
nothing wrond with the car… it had a straight body and a great running
engine… DOT impounded and scrapped the car via a crusher.
