Hi Ralph Weibel & all – Ralph, if Philip Porter calls out August '53 for
674224, it means the car was despatched from Browns Lane in Coventry then
– thus, it IS a 1953, not a 1954. Jerry Oliver’s friend with S674265 has
a car that was probably first registered in '54, but that # (one later than
yours) was also despatched in August '53. I hope this helps – Larry Martz*****

Sorry to be pedantic, but Philip Porters dates are DATE OF MANUFACTURE,
clearly identified in factory manufacturing records as the date of Chassis
Completion. The Date of Dispatch usually was a few days to a few weeks
later, although in some instances there was quite an abnormally large
discrepancy. Date of Manufacture (DOM), is really the only meaningful, and
is also the most accurate date to identify XKs as this determines actual
build specification, so any other date used will create confusion. In
Australia, given the two months plus shipping time, and time sitting in a
showroom, cars regularly have a First Registration date many months later
than the DOM, so tags such as model-years, registration dates and
date-of-dispatch really are not accurate.

The Jaguar Heritage Certificate for my 1957 XK-140 states:

“Date Built: 13 September 1956
This is a 1957 model year car (changeovers took place end of August)”

This is one reason why S674265 could be in the 1954 model year.

Mike Carpenter

Ralph, the German Xk Register compiled by Ulrich Echterhoff, shows the
following car (one before yours, which is no on the list):
XK 120 OTS Aug-53 LHD 674223

Ralph, the dates that Phil Porter quotes are NOT despatch dates, they are
“Chassis Completed” dates, which I take to be in effect the date that a
number was allocated to the chassis. Despatch dates were typically several
weeks later. Regards, John Elmgreen (PS thanks for the Malt at XK50).
