[xk] Oil Pan Rear Gasket

Hi All,

I removed my oil pan to replace the gaskets.

The new oil pan gasket kit came with 2 different rear seals.
One is cork and one is rubber with ridges.

Question, which rear seal is recommended? The cork or the
rubber?

If cork, I assume I need to first soak in oil.

Thanks in advance for your recommendation.

Based on some reading of our forum posts, I will use the
cork rear seal with some Permatex Copper High Temp sealer.

Thanks,

I believe the cork seal was used with the cast aluminum
sumps, and the rubber seal was used with the pressed steel
sumps.
I always use Permatex No. 2 sealer for any gaskets that see oil.–

Use the cork with Permatex #2. Do not soak in oil.

I need to replace or repair the radiator drain spigot on our '52 120
OTS. I’ve been informed that they are not available as repros. Does
anyone have a good original that they are willing to sell to me or can
recommend a source for a replacement part?

For the time being, I have plugged the central hole in my spigot and
inserted it as a plug. I can simply remove it if necessary to drain the
radiator. It’s nice to have it back on the road again

Bruce,

My drain had a slight leak. I removed it, took it apart and
cleaned it. Really not much to it.

I used some plumbers grease as I reassembled. Now it works
great and no leaks.

A fun project!

Hi Godfrey,

I believe what you call a split pin, I think of as a cotter
pin.

Yes, I was very careful when I straightened it out to
remove. Then reused the same old one, no issues.

The XK’s site says theirs is not quite identical to original
and does not give a picture.

Be aware the thread is 1/2-20 ANF straight thread with a
fiber washer, so don’t put a tapered pipe thread plug in there.

There should be a steel coil spring with a small flat washer
on the bottom of the plug shaft. The order of assembly is:
plug shaft
large D washer
coil spring
small flat washer
split cotter pin–

My mistake, should have miked it. The thread is .516
diameter so it is 1/4 BSPP with 19 threads per inch.–

Update: I successfully rebuilt the old one (I think). No drips and
turns freely. It had a small amount of corrosion on the barrel. I
spoke with SNG… and they are sending another one by express
mail. Very good service. I will have a back up! Note the SNG…
one does fit the original 1956 pipe hole, which the other guy’s
ones don’t.–
