[xk] Petrol tank support rod nuts

I am preparing to install the petrol tank and I am not sure
how many lock nuts there should be on the support rods. In the
spare parts catalog there is a listing for the lock nut
NN.231/L and it shows a quantity of 6. Is this correct or is
this an error and 8 lock nuts should be used? If there are
only 6, what 2 rods don’t get a lock nut?

Each rod has a nut at the top and the rod is hammered at the
end.
There are 2 nuts at the bottom (and a plain washer, I
believe). One of the nuts (the outer one) is thinner.

On mine the upper end of the front rods have a regular size
nut welded on. They are dropped through the chassis brackets
so there is no need for a second nut there. The upper end of
the rear rods and the lower end of all rods have a regular
nut and a thin nut. The thin nut is sometimes called a jam
nut because it is jammed against the other nut to lock them
together.

So 8 regular nuts and 6 thin nuts is the correct total.

This idea of a heavy fuel tank suspended under the chassis
by four rods is perhaps not the best design for structural
strength, though the idea of keeping the weight lower is
desirable in a sports car. The Mark V from which the XK120
chassis was copied has the tank higher up attached to the
body above the chassis.
The chassis brackets and support panel channels are not
necessarily going to be perfectly perpendicular to the rods,
so a perfect 90 degree nut and washer fitment is not assured.
If the nuts were to work themselves loose we would have a
tank swinging about and getting itself adrift. Apparently
the jam nuts work, otherwise we would hear about more
drifting XK120 fuel tanks.–

Rob,

If the jam nuts on your car are originals, are they
chamfered on just one side or are they chamfered on both
sides? Also, can you tell what the original finish of the
jam nuts might have been?–

The jam nuts aka thin nuts are chamfered on one side,
machined flat on the other side. As are the regular nuts
tightened against them. Both flat sides together.
There is no remaining original finish that I can be sure of,
but since so many of the ANF threaded fasteners on this car
are that red wash paint we have discussed on this forum, I
suspect these nuts were originally red wash as well.–

Thanks for the reply guys. 6 jam nuts it is.
Rob, thanks for also pointing out that they are ANF.
I had assumed that they were BSF.
