[xk] Positive earth alternaters

Some minor trivia following on from this thread: I do not know why the pomms used positive earth systems and I can find no reference to a reason, but Sir Fredrick Royce (who we all know was an electrical engineer before building cars) maintained that neg. Earth systems caused less vehicle corrosion than pos.earth systems, thus all RRs were neg. Earth. The first alternater I saw was fitted to the Chrysler Valiant that came out in Aus and was a source of mystical wonder to we apprentices, as prior to that all cars had generators and they were very forgiving things. This was in the late 50s to early 60s so it is no wonder modern folk get confused with generators.Regards Peter Hitchin

More trivia…

Awhile back I picked up about a dozen new old stock alternators
that were supposed to be for ser.1 XKE’s ('65 - '67). Turned out
they were for Aston Martins and were positive ground (so I was
told). They were identical to the E’s alt. except for the (+) gnd.
I checked with an auto electrics rebuilder, and he said that the
only difference is in the diodes. They can be changed to (-) gnd.
diodes and the conversion is done. I never did get a chance to do
anything with them. A British car collector bought them all - he
had an Aston Martin or two. I believe they fit the DB6. He seemed
REAL happy to have bought them.

You might go to a general British car forum - like
Britishcarforum.com and ask if anybody knows of other British cars
with positive ground alternators. Maybe Rovers, Humber, Van Den
Plas, etc.

Of no particular significance, but SS used negative earth until the
introduction of the OHV Jaguar engine fro the 1936 model.–
