[xk] Re: Old portable radios

Guys, am I the only one who had to build his own radio? Crystal, speaker,
transistor (huge), etc from Heath or Zenith or the hobby shop. My brothers
and I built several to listen to Art Roberts on all 50,000 watts of WLS while
dreaming of driving a 1953 Jaguar XK120 Drop Head Coupe(oblig cont). Dad
made us each build at least one before we could buy one that you could
actually carry with you.

Great Rally story, Ralph. Love your english.

Jerry, try reading old LeMans stories to her at night so she won’t wake up.

Gardner,

No! you are not alone! but dad didn’t actually push me into it…he
helped by winding the “salt box” with the required # of turns…I was
six then…I started with flash light cells and lamps at about
4…thanks to my father…

I built several primitive radios in the late 50s, but none of them would pick up WLS from Saint Louis. My dad bought me a Hammarlund HQ-150 that would. I listened nightly to WLS, but it was more Dick Biondi at first, then Art Roberts. Good times!
