Thanks to all who responded to my tall rear end problem! I think it was Sir
Charles who recommended to check the front end to make sure it wasn’t too low
making the rear end “seem” high. I referenced the service manual and found
where it said “…a 7 1/8’’ test piece should just pass below the lower face
of the most forward parallel section of the chassis frame”. My measurement at
that point, keep in mind it’s a 140 and the manual is for a 120, is 8". So if
anything I’m a little high, so to speak. I also measured from the lowest
point of the suspension to the garage floor and came up with only 5 1/2".
I checked the rear shackles and they aren’t facing forward, they are more
vertical then forward or back. As I push on the rear of the car I do get some
bounce so I guess it’s OK to assume the suspension is working. The gas tank
is in place but empty. There is no spare tire or interior, yet. I really
would like to get the car sitting right before I go any further into the
reassembly, if I can. It just looks so ugly with it’s rear end up in the air!
I guess I should measure the distance from the bottom of the rear body panel
to the garage floor but if I go out to measure good old CompuServe will shut
me down! Would it be possible if someone with a 140 OTS that sits right
measure the distance and let me know? Maybe I’m just looking at the car on a
bias?! As always any help will be appreciated.
I’m entering this thread a little late, but I’m hoping this might be useful.
From past experience I can attest that the front suspension settings are
quite different on the 120 and 140: 7 1/8 inches, as you state, for the 120,
but 11 1/4 inches for the 140. If memory serves me right, that measurement
is given in either the torsion bar adjustment section of the 140 owner’s
manual or the steering section of the 140 shop manual supplement (or both).
Hope this helps,
Jon Schrock
