[xk] re: xk fuel tank question

Hello Bernhard, My XK 150 is missing the vent tube. Can you tell me
how long your tube is. Also, I saw on a later 150 the vent tube was
attached to another tube that returned to the gas tank. Do you know
which one is correct?

Hello Bill,
as the gas tank is in the car I cant take a look at the vent tube
to tell you how long it is. I guess Gary Grant, who posted two
pictures of his XK 140 tank on 9 Jul 2005 can tell you the length
of the tube as he has easily access to it. On my car there is only
one tube going inside - I dont know if two or one tube is correct,
sorry.

Best regards

Hi Bill

Its probably not much help to you, but on the XK140 gas tank, the
little vent tube disappears down into the tank, and I cant
determine where it goes.

The tank seems to be divided into 3 compartments by two vertical
walls inside the tank. The 2 walls extend from a back wall to a
front wall of the tank, creating 3 compartments side by side.
The vent tube is probably intended to allow air to escape from one
or more of the compartments, while fuel is delivered to the tank,
and the air becomes displaced and needs to escape.

It probably doesnt matter if the little vent tube is missing, as
there is a set of circular holes in the walls inside the tank,
which would let the air move from one compartment to the next
compartment, if the tank is filled up slowly enough. Is there
anything rattling around inside your tank?

As someone previously mentioned, the little vent tube didnt seem to
work too well on the 140 tanks, for some reason.

I have only filled the tank slowly recently, and have noticed no
splashing back or overflowing, so far, so I presume the circular
holes in the walls inside the tank seem to allow enough air
movement among the compartments.

Perhaps someone with an XK150 tank could comment on where the vent
tube is supposed to be found, on that type of tank.

Im intending to shortly clean out and seal up the inside of this
tank, because rust is all flaking off inside there, so the little
vent tube could easily become clogged up with sealant, but I cant
imagine it would matter very much.–

Bill,
I have just gotten back from a trip and am slowly getting organized. The
tank from my early 150 has been reconditioned and is sitting in a bag in my
shop. Will try to get a look at it tomorrow.

The tube is rather short: It begins 3/8 inch below the top of the entrance
to the tank, takes a sweeping bend, then ends up at the high point of the
tank 5 inches in from the end panel. Total length may be 8 inches more or
less. It is not parallel to the wall of the entrance pipe, rather, it
begins close to the wall, then at max is 7/16 inch from the wall, then
follows the inner surface of the top of the tank. Seems to be
welded/soldered/brazed to the tank.

I had a commercial “Renu” process done to my tank. No clue as to how they
kept the tubing and threads clear.
