[xk] replacing lost title

Guys,
I’m in New Jersey. Have a 53 car with a lost title. There probably
never was one since many states did not issue titles back then and
issued only transferable registrations. In any case, I need to
aquire a New Jersey title for this car.
Anyone have experience with state of NJ regarding this issue and
with replacing a lost title?
Any help appreciated,

Hi Rich: Good luck with your task. I have only dealt with my state of
Louisiana, but the
motor vehicle folks there will help IF you can provide decent documentation.
Lots of
putting square pegs into round holes, but MOST of their requirements are
related to the
task.
Lots of people go to Alabama to get a title, as that state apparently did
not have certificates of title during the time period of our cars. There are
people who advertise in
Hemmings who will acquire a title for you for a fee. However, I have heard a
couple different rumors (urban myths??) lately about people in Ariz. and
Calif. having trouble with cars with Alabama titles. Someone told me that one
of the current television
street rod builders had some trouble within the past few weeks. Again, don’t
want to spread rumors, but I have always wondered about the merchantability
of Alabama titles, as they were always so easy to obtain. I am not surprised
that any
state DMV would not at least closely scrutinize an Alabama title–
particularly should the person presenting a nicely restored car mis-state the sales
price in order to save on their state’s sales/use tax or registration fees.

Rich;

Contact the DMV in New Hampshire about getting a title. I got
several for old motorcycles easy and cheap. There are also people
that do that work for a fee.

if you have a friend in Connecticut or New Hampshire…they can register a
car or bike older than 15 years. They may need to physically see the car
and the vin number, but I know NH is easier…

Hey Rich,

Brady here. I didn’t have a title for my car either and I was worried
about getting one. In my case the car had 1964 North Carolina plates
on it when I got it. I bought it in 1974 from my brother Tom.

So all I did was have him give me a bill of sale, back dated to that
time and sign it.

I applied for a title through my insurance company (they actually have
a “runner” who deals with the registry for ten bucks per transaction.
It went through with no questions asked. Routine. No problem.

I got this out of the way before I started the restoration in 1996,
just to have the peace of mind that I would be able to register the car
and drive it.

Don’t know if it’s that easy in New Jersey, but it worked here with no
problem. Just needed a bill of sale.

Brigadoon is getting close.
