[xk] Salisbury rear axle ratio change

I live in south Florida with nary a twist or turn in our roads.
All open highway and 70+ mph driving. SO - I am considering
changing the 3.54:1 or 3.70:1 final drive ratio in my DHC to a
3.23:1 ratio to allow more comfortable high speed cruising.
Do any of you know where I could find such a gearset? A ring &
pinion would be great, a complete rear would be better. As always
the cost is a real factor.
Thanks

The differential is a standard Dana 44, and ring and pinion sets to
change the ratio are available. If you check the archives in this
and the E-type forum you should find a source of suppliers. It’s
not a difficult change over, and most any rear end shop can do it.
As far as which ratio to use remember that if you have shorter
tires that will raise the ratio. When I purchased radials for my
140 they were shorter than the original 6.00 X 16. I calculated
that in order to maintain the standard 3.54 ratio I would have to
change the differential to 3.31. With that in mind, if you have
radials, or are planning to put them on, you may want to consider
switching to a 3.07. This will enable you to cruise at 70mph while
turning around 2800rpm.

I found a Dana 44, 3.07:1 carrier & pinion with a 30 spline axle
shaft. Is this correct for my 120?–

I couldn’t tell you if the 30 spline is correct for your car. All
you need is the ring and pinion, with a couple of exceptions. If
the spline on the pinion is NOT 10, then you will need a different
flange for your drive shaft. The later model rings were attached
with 7/16’’ bolts, where as yours is attached with 3/8’’ bolts. Dana
makes a bush to reduce the size down to 3/8’'.

List I have a 150 O/D car with 15 inch wheels fitted still running the
4.09 diff I have to use O/D when 50mph comes up This ratio also puts
the engine note right on song at 60mph its too noisy in an open car .
The wheels being smaller also affect the speedo reading I,m presently
building up a 3.54 diff by fitting mk9 tubes into a mk2 L/S diff case
I will have to make up new half shafts So i can leave 4.09 axle in one
piece . Does anyone make half shafts for 140 /150 I used to make lots
of them but tooling up for just 2 shafts is not worth the trouble

Roger,

If you still have the later 4HA such a swap is easily done. The modern
Dana/Spicer Model 44 is virtually identical to the late Salisbury 4HA’s. The
Dana 44 was used in Ford trucks, International Harvester Scouts, Jeep
Cherokee’s and many others. The currently available Dana gearsets generally
have a fine spline pinion shaft, so you would need to purchase a new
fine-spline companion flange to mate to your 120 driveshaft. All sorts of
limited slip or locking differentials are available, but you need to make
sure you use one with the correct spline count for the 120 axles. If you
now have a 3.54 or 3.70 ratio the proposed 3.23 will fit directly on your
existing differential unit, with no axle worries. About the only pitfall I
can think of would occur if you rear axle has been swapped for an earlier
model sometime in the past. The early 2HA’s are a dead issue from a gearset
perspective, having been long obsolete. The early 4HA’s used smaller ring
gear bolts that were not up to the task for sporting use. I have never
taken one of these apart that did not have at least two broken bolts. If
such is the case, you would be best to replace both the differential and the
gears, all of which will fit in you rear axle housing.

Best regards,

Mike Spoelker

OK, I bought a ring & pinion including a limited slip carrier from
ebay. Dana 44, 3.06:1 ratio. Seems it comes from a Jeep.
I probably do not need the limited slip as I no longer even look at
snow on the TV much less in person.
When it arrives, I will count splines etc and re-visit the list
with all my new information before I proceed.

Happy days to all and let the XKs rule!

I have a 3.07 in my 150, with the supra 5 speed and E type 15" wheels gives about 29 mph per 1000 rpm.I would go lower ,particularly with 16 " wheels. The car is quicker in 4 th gear than 5th, indicating that it’s to high geared.
