[xk] Sheet metal problems on Jaguar body

Hello List,

I am soliciting repair advice for the body work and sheet metal at
the ‘‘mouth’’ of the engine compartment. This area seems to be a
problem on MANY XK models that I have seen - specifically on the
exterior of the car where the grill meets the car below the bonnet
catch plate and mechanism. I understand that due to design flaws
combined with the thin metal in this area that the car shows
particular stress in cracking paint and metal, particularly at the
corners of the opening.

Has anyone come up with a successful, long lasting solution for
this problem? Do you re-inforce the inside of the sheet metal with
pieces welded in? Do you just live with it?

Any thoughts appreciated. Best, Margaret–

If you’re referring to that 6’’ or 7’’ wide piece holding the front
of the wings together, then there isn’t a whole lot you can do
about it. Make sure all the fasteners securing the wings are
present and tight. Body shops love to fill in the seam between that
piece and the wing, with filler. It is better left as a seam to
allow flexing, without cracking the filler. It would probably even
be a good idea to loosen or remove it prior to painting so the
paint didn’t crack along the seam. Also, avoid hitting deep
potholes or curbs.

FWIIW on both the FHC and the OTs this piece was rotten and had to be
replaced…superbly fitting replacements were procured from Schelin in CT.

Klaus,
Sturbridge, MA. He’s making some repair pieces for me now & has in
the past. Quality work, better than the original.

Dear Margaret

The problem you describe with the tie piece between the front
fenders should not be a problem except possibly in some harsh
conditions, assuming the piece was worth fixing in the first place.
In the event your bodyman knew to straighten everything else on the
front end first another possibility is that an attempt was made to
weld the area without completly removing all the old lead, big
mistake to be lazy in this area. The majority of the XK’S used a
fair amount of lead in the seams up front and one would hope you
found someone to duplicate that verses that stuff you mix with
hardner,it just dosen’t like to be spread on that thick.Sure did
like Toby’s horn repair–
