[xk] Steering wheel splined shaft

Is the steering wheel splined shaft on a 120 (1953) the same size
for all years or did they vary. I came across a wheel in pristine
condition but only problem the splined shaft is bigger than the
shaft on my steering column. Is it possible it is something other
than a 120 wheel or am I missing soething else here? If so… think
it can be adapted to fit. Some type of bushing. I know my steering
column is original as I removed it from the car. Just didn’t have a
wheel.

All posts appreciated…Thanks–

Luv2sail,
My guess is that the whell you purchased is from another car. To my
knowledge, the column should receive a 120 wheel regardless of chassis
number, date of production etc. Not having another 120 wheel to compare
with, take a look at Urs’ book page144. The spline is small. I’m limited on
my knowledge of the Mark Jaguars, but my first guess is that you have a MK
steering wheel, which look very similar to the 120. I hope this is helpful.
Is Luv2sail you given name or stage name? ;-)))
Cheers,

In reply to a message from luv2sail sent Fri 12 Mar 2004:

I agree, it’s probably not a XK steering wheel. I have a spare Mk7
wheel which is 1’’ larger in diameter than that on my XK120. The
appearance is similar, including the boss, but the bore of the
spined hole is quite a bit larger. If it still has the horn push
and the manette you could use those.–

So far as I know, XK-120, 140, early Mk and early E-Type used the same
7/8" fine spline steering shaft design. I have several Moto-Lita
aftermarket steering wheel hubs for various Jaguars, along with the
original 120 steering wheel, and they will all slide onto the 120
steering shaft. My guess is that the wheel you found is from a
different make. It is definitely NOT worth the trouble of fabricating a
splined adapter to fit the wrong wheel. Any one-off adapter would cost
more to fabricate than just buying a 120 wheel. Then there is the
safety issue.

Apologies for the long disappearance form this site… to all who replied… I was out of the Jag resto. for a while due to divorce and $$$ after the divorce… I am currently getting back underway with the restoration…
luv2sail is my stage/social name or handle…

Hi Ray:

I installed a smaller diameter Mota Lita wheel on my XK120 DHC, thus have the original sitting in the basement. It is not concours, but would fit.

The XK120 splined shaft is indeed 7/8 diameter and originally had a 17" diameter steering wheel. What you have is a Mark 7 steering wheel which has a 1" diameter spline and is 18" in diameter. Jaguar also offered a 16" steering wheel as an optional extra. I have one of these and it actually measures 15 3/8 OD. Mine is a repro that I obtained on eBay years ago and originally supplied by Tracy. It gives noticeably more leg room than the original on my 54 XK120 DHC.

Thanks for that info John…

Chris… if you still have the120 wheel… could you send me a couple pics (luv2sail21@cox.net) and what you want for it… guess i will try to sell the one I have… it is in ex. condition but as John said, it’s for a Mk. 7 …won’t work for me… only have one Jag… Bought the wheel on e-bay a long time ago… owner swore it would fit… being a newby to Jags… I got took… never too old to learn… If I hadn’t inherited the 120 through my second marriage… I could never have enjoyed all this fun… guess I will march on…
P.S. I am actually in love with this car… it’s a work of art…keeps off the streets …obviously
