[xk] Tonneau Cover for XK120 OTS

Hi All
I ordered a new Tonneau cover in black stayfast from a well known
online interior trim supplier. My problem is that it doesen’t fit
my car. the distance between the centers of the teardrop chromes is
33.75’’ on my car. The distance between the centers of the leather
tabs sewn into the new Tonneau coover is 32.25’’. This new Tonneau
wont fit over the teardrop chromes on my car. The supplier states
that he has made Tonneau Covers from his templates for 30 years
without problems. I would like to know if my car is somehow
different, are the teardrop chromes fitted in a different place and
thus wont accept a standard Tonneau?. I would be intrested in
finding out the distance between the centers of the teardrop
chromes on other members cars in order to determine if my car is
Different from others?. Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Michael,
If I recall correctly, your car is a 1954, like mine, isn’t it ? I’ll measure mine when I get back over to the garage.
Incidentally, my tonneau came from Bill Bassett and it fit very well.

Hi Michael,

My car doesn’t have the chrome teardrops installed so my measurement isn’t
exactly like yours, since the two teardrops are not exactly on the same
plane. However, the distance between the holes, measured arount the curve
of the body, is about 33 5/8". That’s certainly closer to your measurement
than to the other one, and the geometry of the body suggests that if they
were installed they could easily be 33 3/4" between their tops.

leather tabs???.. the tonneau dosen’t have leather tabs. The
tonneau for the late cars has a flat metal bar which is threaded
thru the rear which slips under the teardrops. Who the heck are
you dealing with???–

Michael,
Getting back to you, my teardrops are also 33.60 inches apart.
My tonneau also has leather tabs for the rear clips, but the soft top has a metal bar, of course. To my knowledge, I have not seen an XK120 tonneau cover with a metal bar - but I guess I’m still learning every day.
Cheers,

Godfrey,
I happen to be the one Michael is dealing with. I think you do a disservice
to both the list and myself making statements like that. You obviously do
not have a clue what you are talking about. Because something happens to be
on a car you’ve had a long time does not make it correct. You and I have had
the discussion before about what is on your car and how correct it might. A
little research might be in order on your part.
Michael also knows that if the tonneau I made for him is incorrect, I will
replace it and if his car needs a custom tonneau, I will provide it.

Michael,
You can’t go wrong with Bassett’s. My tonneau has been in service for just over 10 years, and it still looks like new and fits well. And as you know, my car is driven and has seen the rain & abusive sun a lot on the many rallies my 120 does.

Thanks for the great response to my query Re Tonneau Covers and
measurements, It seems that the measurements on my car are pretty
close to Knights, Mike Ecks, and SK 99s so it looks that my car is
standard in this regard . Thanks also to Bill Bassett for his
response I never doubted that Bill Bassett would look after me. I
purchased my interior kit from bill and it was of high quality and
fitted very well, I have always found him very helpful and great to
deal with. In posting this Query about Tonneau covers I was trying
to determine if my car was different to others out there so that I
could make an informed decision regarding my car and how I wish to
proceed. One must consider that for those of us that live in Canada
and import goods from the USA we face stiff additional charges in
terms of Canadian Customs and UPS Shipping and handeling plus all
the hassel and costs involved if we must return them. I thank
everyone who responded to my posting the information was very
useful.

Yep, me too. I have a 1954 XK 120 OTS, Bill made the tonneau, my bullets are 33.75" apart, the tonneau fits great. Had it for years now.

My 1954 OTS tonneau also has leather tabs.
The hood as the flat metal bar insert.
My tonneau is not as nice as a Bill Bassett piece (boo hoo).

Mine cleats are 33 and 5/8th between centers.
